Can I start a career in my 40s?

Posted by: Sharifa Bakhtani | Sep 6, 2023

Is it too late? Do I have the time?
If you’re finding yourself at a crossroads in your 40s, these questions might be playing on your mind and it’s normal to question the feasibility of a major change considering your experiences and commitments- but it’s this choice that holds the key to a new chapter of growth.

Starting a career or transitioning careers can present a lot of challenges and setbacks in general, let alone in your 40s. However, navigating these hurdles with determination and a positive mindset can ensure it’s successful. Not to mention there are many popular examples of how it’s been so in the past:

JK Rowling was a single mother on benefits before she started writing her first book of the Harry Potter series in her early 30s. Not only had she already taken a leap of faith amidst life’s challenges, but her journey to success truly began in her 40s.

What about Julia Child who was a government research assistant and later worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. In her 40s, she found her passion for cooking and went on to become a renowned chef, author and television personality.

There’s Vera Wang as well who started ice skating at the age of six and later competed in pairs figure skating competitively. It wasn’t until she was 40 that she entered fashion design, opened a New York bridal shop and debuted her own line of gowns becoming one of the most prominent bridal gown designers in the industry.

I mean Colonel Sanders didn’t start KFC until he was 65…

Life's most beautiful stories often begin when you decide to take that first, bold step regardless of your age.

How to go about it

Looking for a new job or changing your career path can be tough, regardless of your age. But when you're in your 40s, it can come with its own set of challenges, like dealing with age bias and finding the balance between work and personal life. To help you navigate this transition smoothly, here are some simple tips to consider.

Setting goals

Setting goals for your new career is crucial. Start by defining clear and attainable objectives for your desired path. Break down those big, long-term goals into smaller, manageable steps. This way, you'll not only have a roadmap to follow but also a sense of accomplishment as you tick off each milestone along the way. For some careers, you might need specific certificates or to complete certain courses and although this might take time and demotivate you - it’s important to think of the bigger picture. Which brings me to my next tip…

Stay positive

There are a number of challenges and setbacks you might face but it’s important to not let this discourage you. Like Walt Whitman said - “Keep your face towards the sunshine”.

More often than not, with career changes comes a temporary decrease in income and based on your situation this can be very disheartening but if it’s a career you’re passionate about it’ll be worth it in the end - if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.

Ageism can present an extra hurdle in your 40s, yet your experiences are your strengths. Embrace your age as an advantage and showcase your adaptability. Your path might be unique, but with determination, each step leads to a rewarding destination.

Building connections

Networking is an essential step that holds true regardless of where you stand in your career journey. Whether you're taking your initial steps into the professional world or embarking on a transformative change, connecting with others can open doors you never imagined. Building relationships not only enhances your chances of finding opportunities but also provides valuable insights, mentorship, and a supportive community.

So, whether you're a seasoned professional or a career explorer, remember that networking is a powerful tool that can amplify your path to success.

Conclusion

In essence, the question of launching a career in your 40s revolves around embracing change and your own potential. Remember, your age doesn't limit your aspirations. It's your determination that shapes your narrative. So, whether you're transitioning or starting anew, believe in your ability to create a fulfilling chapter, regardless of the number on the calendar.
