Apprenticeship Tips from an Apprentice

Posted by: Sharifa Bakhtani | Feb 8, 2024

Starting an apprenticeship can be both exciting and a bit daunting. I'm right there in the trenches with you, navigating this unique blend of work and study. From my experience so far, I've picked up a few tricks that have made the journey smoother and way more rewarding. Here's my top tips for making the most out of your apprenticeship experience.

Time Management

First off, time management is your best friend. Remember, it's supposed to be 80% placement and 20% studying. Don't leave your coursework or apprenticeship work until the last minute. I've found that chipping away at it a little each day, or dedicating a whole day once a week, is much more manageable than trying to cram a month's worth of work into the final week. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

Be a Self-Starter

Don't wait for knowledge to come to you; go after it. I make it a point to ask my apprenticeship provider for links to courses or learning resources. Diving into subjects that interest me or are relevant to my placement has not only broadened my understanding but has also allowed me to apply new knowledge directly to my work. It's empowering to bring something new to the table.

Stay Organised

Organisation isn't just about keeping your desk tidy. It's about keeping track of your work, coursework, deadlines, and progress. I've developed a system that works for me, ensuring that everything has its place and time. Whether it's a digital calendar, a planner, or an app that keeps you on track, find your method and stick to it.

Collect Evidence

Every milestone, every piece of positive feedback, and every project you nail—note it down. This isn't just about patting yourself on the back; it's crucial for beefing up your CV and showcasing your achievements to future employers. It's easy to forget the small wins, but they add up to a compelling story of your capabilities and growth.

Salary Perspectives

Let's talk money. Yes, the starting salary for apprentices isn't always headline-making, but remember the bigger picture. This is an investment in your future. The skills, qualifications, and experience you're gaining now will pay dividends in your career and salary prospects down the line. Patience and perspective are key.

Get Involved

Lastly, don't be a wallflower. Get involved in meetings, suggest ideas, and participate in planning sessions. The more you put into your placement, the more you'll get out of it. This is your chance to make an impression, learn from those around you, and truly make the most of your apprenticeship.

Embarking on an apprenticeship is a bold step towards building a career you're passionate about. It's not always going to be easy, but with these tips, you can navigate the challenges and reap the rewards. Remember, this is just the beginning of your journey. Make it count!

Wishing you all the best on your apprenticeship adventure,
