Utilities Operations Engineer

Location - Reading / Basingstoke Area
Salary: Starting from £35,720 (dependent on experience)
Closing Date - 11th April 2024

What's A Day like in the life of a Utilities Operations Engineer?

As a member of the busy Utilities Operations team, you will be responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and contractor works activities within the bounds of your appointed Network delivery area (Water/Wastewater). You will also be working on Leakages and the mitigation to controlling them, working on flood schemes. Holding regular meetings with internal and external stake holders.
You will hold Authorised Person appointments and undertake work activities within your appointed area.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Providing leadership and direction when managing plant works by Functional / Contract resources.

  • Undertaking the safe operation, maintenance, and management of plant under your control and in line with legislative requirements.

  • Monitoring and reacting to all generated alarms for the plant and systems under your control.

  • To expedite notification of Plant / Network failures to the relevant Operations Manager / Network Manager and keep stakeholders informed.

  • Undertaking the role of Authorised Person within boundaries of appointment for the role.

  • Maintaining and promoting high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security, and quality.

  • Additional accountabilities for this job profile may be defined and appointed through the Chief Engineer Management Arrangements, with appointees listed within the Company Design Authorities and Technical Authorities, as held in the company management system.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining leadership and oversight of plant upkeep, personnel, and operations within your area of responsibility.

  • Undertaking and managing Authorised Persons Duties IAW relevant regulations and corporate standards.

  • Deputising for the Operations Manager when required

  • Issuing and receiving permits to work (e.g. - certificates of isolation, Sanction for test, limitation of access certificates, outage requests etc.) for staff and contractors as required.

  • Preparing, assessing, reviewing and providing instruction against Safe Systems of Work for the Networks / Plant within boundaries of control.

  • Undertaking the role of Work Supervisory Officer within the boundaries of your area of control.

  • The Company may require you to fulfil any other reasonable duties aligned to your position from time to time in line with business needs.

Whilst not to be considered a check list, candidates should be able to demonstrate some of the following:

  • Technician Apprenticeship or ONC with suitable additional experience.

  • Engineering capability across relevant networks, comprising a range of infrastructure facilities and associated plant and equipment.

  • Experience of working with Water/Waste Water would be beneficial but is not essential

  • Experience in utility / building service delivery over a large portfolio of buildings.
