We understand the changing needs of our diverse customer and partner base while building and maintaining an electricity network that facilitates Net Zero at the lowest cost.The Net Zero & Network Development team are at the forefront of this exciting challenge.Understanding the government's commitment to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the various investment drivers to achieve this ambition and building upon the interactions and opportunities created by distribution or transmission electricity network investment, will we be able to deliver an efficient and coordinated programme and meet customers evolving needs going forward.The work content is very dynamic and involves guidance to partners on UK Power Networks network interface activities, technical submissions to National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), Electricity System Operator (NGESO) and Distribution System Operator (DSO), review proposals under ETYS, SQSS and NOA to ensure awareness of National Grid activities in the region and develop the Asset Portfolio Plan (APP) to provide visibility of medium to long term transmission and distribution (T&D) interface investments.Principal AccountabilitiesIdentify and develop holistic network investments as required to help UK Power Networks to satisfy the Distribution and Grid Code obligations, and to facilitate the UK's transition to a Net Zero economy, including the connection of offshore wind, HVDC interconnectors and other transmission related works.Provide whole system information to the Regional Development Plans across the three electricity distribution areas, review combined impact of growth in network demand, customer connections, distributed energy resources and other UKPN strategies to maximize network development synergies at transmission network interfaces.Participate in regional, national and industry T&D conferences and discussion groups. Participate in technical forums including those promoted by ENA, DNOs, NGET and NGESO, DSO and FSO. Provide feedback to UKPN management team on latest developments and opportunities.Engage with UKPN external comms & regulations for wider exposure of Whole System activities and outcomes.Responsible for T&D technical submissions to National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), Electricity System Operator (NGESO) and Distribution System Operator (DSO) including Connection and Modification Applications, Distribution Impact assessment and Project Progressions.Identify cost effective solutions to meet the needs of the electricity network under RIIO-ED2 and beyond, in particular synergies between distribution, infrastructure, and transmission network solutions, encouraging innovation and flexibility to improve efficiency and deliver outperformance against regulatory goals.Review National Grid Transmission Owner and Electricity System Operator proposals under ETYS, SQSS and NOA to ensure awareness of National Grid activities in the region. Assess impact and opportunities arising from transmission works by carrying out whole system assessments across UKPN DNO boundaries.Develop the Asset Portfolio Plan (APP) to provide visibility of medium to long term transmission and distribution (T&D) interface investments to UK Power Networks partners. Collaborate with regional planning teams, distribution system operator, property & consents and capital programme & procurement teams in the development and delivery of whole system projects.Help implement future transmission network models and forecasts to deliver improved and forward looking view of impact and opportunities for whole system developments.Help develop Net Zero improvement programmes, across the three RIIO-ED2 and UKPN funding mechanisms, providing expertise from initial concept to business implementation.Support the Whole System Network Strategy team in gathering technical information about assets, carrying out simple high level network design and preparing scope documents for investment projects for approval as part of project governance and control process.You will need to build relationships with company partners in Asset Management, Distribution System Operator, Capital Programme & Procurement, Network Operations and Connections.Knowledge, qualifications and experienceThe varied nature of the team activities benefits from drawing skills from different backgrounds. In addition to the following:Qualified to a minimum of HNC/HND level, relevant professional electrical qualification or equivalent professional experience in an Engineering environment. Academic degree in Engineering, relevant professional electrical qualification or equivalent professional experience in an Engineering environment preferable.An understanding of the principles of power engineering and distribution network operation.Awareness of customer activities and the impact that renewable generation and electrification of heat and transport is having on the UK electricity and energy industry.Safety and environmental awareness. Understanding of Construction, Design and Maintenance (CDM) Regulations.You should have knowledge of the following topics:Design and operation of the UK electricity system, in particular distribution networks, distributed generation and energy storage.Understanding of the principles and operation of electricity network assets such as transformers, switchgear, cables, overhead lines, protection, substation design and others.An understanding of industry related Standards and understanding of the requirements of Engineering Recommendations such as ESQCR, P2/7, G5, G74, G98, G99, P28, P29 and others.Understanding of the Distribution and Grid Code requirements to network planning, including National Grid Connection and Use of System Code (CUSC), Security and Quality of Supply Standards - SQSS and Networks Options Assessment – NOA.Knowledge of UK Power Networks policies relevant to the development of the electricity network to meet all of our goals.And the following qualities:Enthusiastic and customer focus, without losing sight of safety and security of supply.Demonstrate a cooperative and team-based approach to achieve overall goals.Think and act ahead of time to take advantage of opportunities for innovation and improvement and to address problems.Have a full, clean driving license.Training and DevelopmentWe appreciate that training is important, this is why we put extra focus to team members by providing a supportive environment, comprehensive development plan and access to experienced and knowledgeable Engineers.Should you not have the required knowledge and skills for the role, we'll consider appointing at a lower grade for the duration of the development plan.Health & Safety ResponsibilitiesManagers and supervisors carry both legal and company responsibilities for ensuring the health and safety of their employees, those under their control and those who might be affected by the work undertaken, i.e. public, visitors and employees of other organisations.
