The Role
As part of the Infrastructure Team and reporting to the Head of IT Operations the Systems Engineer is a hands on role where you would be expected to be technically very strong in your specialist fields and work within Operations to design and implement high quality infrastructure solutions that provide a reliable and stable platform for our line of business applications.
This role bridges the gaps between all three main technology teams within the Capsticks IT department and although part of the Infrastructure team, this role is required to work closely with the Business Solutions and Service Delivery teams.
The role is varied in scope across the entire technology stack, but does have a particular focus on stability and reliability of the VDI and end user compute solution, the role is designed so that a successful candidate will become the primary product owner for a high performance VDI stack, designing solutions that deliver a great experience to our users.
Main Responsibilties
- Server and Desktop Virtualisation technologies (VMware - ESX and Horizon View);
- Desktop Architecture Experience;
- Experience of deployment and testing methods for servers and desktops; MDT, SCCM and Intune.
- Excellent switching experience;
- Experience of network design principles and acting as the technical authority;
- Advanced Active Directory skills, including the use of group policies and personalisation technologies;
- A well developed, practical understanding of network technologies and protocols including TCP/IP, DNS, Wi-Fi, layer 3 routing protocols, sub-netting, QoS & VLANs;
- General knowledge of WAN/MPLS optimisation technologies;
- Understanding of information security principals, issues and solutions;
- Experience of general Disaster Recovery methods and strategies;
- Experience in implementing and managing backup solutions such as Veeam Enterprise;
- Azure integrations, including Azure AD, SQL database and App Services;
- Experience in support and deployment of MS Online Services; Including Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint and Entra
- Well-developed troubleshooting skills;
- Strong interpersonal and customer service-oriented skills;
- Manage change, incidents and service requests, in alignment with ITIL processes
- Backend SAN and NAS storage technologies such as Nimble, Synology and vSAN
- Any other duties as reasonably requested by the IT Director or Head of IT Operations
Skills and Experience
Applicants will have:
- Microsoft Certified Professional (MCSA or above) in Windows Server, Window 10 Enterprise or other Microsoft server infrastructure technology, or equivalent experience;
- VMware Certified Professional;
- Experience working with Mitel Phones systems, including Softphones and SIP trunking;
- Unified communications technologies
- HP Pro-Curve Switch experience CCNA would be highly advantageous;
- Microsoft Exchange
- Some Infrastructure\Platform as a service experience
- Server automation technologies and scripting (PowerShell)
