Systems Engineer

Work as part of a world class custom projects delivery team responsible for the design, development,

verification and delivery of bespoke subsea systems and instruments to meet customer requirements in various offshore markets including Energy, Ocean Science, Defence and offshore renewables.

Lead technical development, working in partnership with Project Managers and the wider company to define, develop and deliver bespoke engineering systems and solutions to meet customer requirements, internal processes, standards and commercial considerations through planning, prototyping, test, validation and integration.

Occasional opportunities for travel to sites both nationally and internationally including our Plymouth Trials facility.

Volume of work: 3 to 4 major projects at a time and support for delivered major projects.

The Role and Role Specific Competencies

  • Gather, Document and Review customer requirements providing technical input by working with the wider engineering teams to propose solutions and system architectures.
  • Work in partnership with Project Managers and Global Business Managers in the formulation and review of technical proposals, ensuring that any customer-imposed standards or compliance requirements are acceptable to the Project and the Company.
  • Define and document proposed technical solutions, working with the sales team and the customer directly to establish engineering requirements, investigate potential solutions, resolve technical uncertainties, and identify risks. This will include establishing NRE estimations, timescales, and resource impact.
  • Provide technical leadership from the concept stage through to the finished system, on time, on budget and to specification, resolving technical issues that arise. This will include direct communication and co-ordination with Engineering teams, the wider company, customers and suppliers.
  • Define, develop and undertake rigorous verification processes and test procedures to validate the systems, hardware, firmware and software elements.
  • Identify, diagnose and rectify faults from module through to system level using personal expertise or other specialist internal resources.
  • Prepare and review both internal and external technical documentation including specifications, designs, report, technical and production drawings, manuals and procedures.
  • Evaluate, monitor and manage risks, escalating issues to the relevant people whilst operating with minimal direct management.
  • Provide regular appropriate and targeted reporting to managers and colleagues including project progress, status updates and risk/issue identification.
  • Represent the Company as a recognised technical authority to customers.
  • Provide customer training as well as advice, guidance and practical assistance in the support of bespoke systems.
  • Assist with the support, development and training of Project Engineers and members of the wider project team.
  • Be self-led and able to operate with minimal direct management but also know when to escalate an issue at the right time.

Contacts and Communication

The role requires good communication skills at many levels. The post holder will interact directly with the following internal stakeholders:

  • Design Engineers (Mechanical, Electronics, Software).
  • Business and Sales managers.
  • Scientists and Survey staff.
  • Operations and installation staff.
  • Procurement and contracts staff.
  • Other specialist groups such as Safety, Finance, Building Services etc.

The post holder will interact with the following external stakeholders:

  • End Customers, sub-contractors (internally and externally located).
  • External engineering consultancies.
  • Specialist third party suppliers

  • Strong ability to work independently without significant supervision.
  • Good ability to identify issue and escalate accordingly

Essential skills

  • Degree qualified in an engineering discipline (system, mechanical, electronic, software, communications or similar)
  • Proven background in engineering design, system engineering or project/product implementation
  • Proven experience involving complex direct customer liaison and working in a matrix organizational structure
  • Proven background and experience of interpreting customer requirements, product specifications and applications.
  • Delivering against agreed timescales and being adaptable to changing requirements.

Desirable skills

  • Awareness of analogue or digital electronics development.
  • Awareness of software development principles.
  • Awareness of mechanical design principles
