About this client/child: Oscar, soon to turn 15, enjoys music, especially Harry Styles, being out and about and is very motivated by food. He also loves water whether it's his foot spa, hot tub, or swimming. Oscar acquired a brain injury from birth and presents with global delay, requiring assistance with all his care needs. Whilst he is non-verbal, he can communicate his emotions through vocalisations and body language. For example, when happy he will clap and sing and when frustrated he will make a grunting sound. Oscar has epilepsy, which is well managed with medication, but the occasional seizures do still occur. Oscar uses a specialist buggy to get around but can sit independently and move around on his knees at home. Oscar can use his right hand to hold his beaker but will require his food to be cut up and fed to him. The family have a portable hoist which they use for transfers.
Overview of role: Oscar attends a specialist school, so the core hours during term time will be 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. However, the family are keen to make this role more attractive so are happy to offer candidates a fixed 39 hour contract all year round. To make up the additional hours there will be some housekeeping and PA duties which would include batch cooking, overseeing and ordering Oscar's medication, grocery shopping, laundry and general tidying up. Once Oscar has been dropped off home by the school bus, he often enjoys coming in and unwinding with a snack. If the weather is nice there's an opportunity to go for a walk to the local park or entertain at home with music or sensory toys. It's then time for dinner and preparing Oscar for his bath and getting ready for bed. Oscar's mum or dad will be on hand to help with transfers. During the school holidays there is much more opportunity to plan activities further afield, Oscar loves travelling on public transport and being out and about, especially visiting art galleries or light shows.
Who this job would suit: This role will suit a Professional Support Worker who is positive, calm, kind and who becomes a real champion for Oscar. We are looking for candidates who have at least 18 months experience working with young people with additional needs, especially a physical disability, and who are comfortable providing personal care.
What’s great about this job: This is a great opportunity to join a relaxed and friendly household who will really value your input and time. Oscar is a great young man who will certainly make the job very rewarding. The family would be happy to offer additional training related to Oscar.
