Purpose of the Role
The post holder will support the delivery of DHU’s green plan and contribute to the collection and reporting of appropriate data to inform DHU’s carbon reduction plan. You will work closely with NHS and local Government colleagues across Derbyshire, Leicestershire, the West Midlands and other stakeholders, the focus of the role will be involved in driving forward specific ‘Greener’ projects.
Specific duties:
Promote an ‘All Things Green’ group from within existing staffing across the organisation.
Managing stakeholder relationships and communications related to projects identified in the Green Plan.
Facilitating group engagement to solve problems and build ‘buy-in’ to solutions.
Working flexibly across the ‘Greener’ NHS portfolio for DHU.
To ensure all public and patient contact with the office is of the highest professional standard especially if involving patients and the public in our decisions.
To operate in a highly political and sensitive environment providing and receiving highly complex information.
Managing project interdependencies within DHU and wider stakeholders
Engaging with critical stakeholders and managing relationships with them to ensure continued buy-in and support for sustainability projects.
Influencing and negotiating with senior stakeholders in line with NHS requirements
Forge close positive working relationships, to support an effective matrix approach to achieve NHS net zero requirements.
Develop and support a portfolio of initiatives in demonstrating value for money and achieving the net zero goal.
Contribute to the strategic planning of team projects, identifying interdependencies across projects/functions and potential impacts on the wider organisation’s goals.
To investigate and promote opportunities to reduce overall cost and environmental impact, including energy efficiency measures, monitoring and use of alternative and new low/zero carbon technologies, compliant with current legislation.
Ensure the collection of utility consumption, cost and carbon footprint information for the completion of the yearly Carbon Reduction Plan which is available on our public website.
Promote and support the delivery of day-to-day activities and projects that deliver DHU’s Green Plan and contributes to the reduction of our carbon footprint.
Responsible for proposing and drafting changes, implementation and interpretation to policies, guidelines and contracts which may impact the business.
The potholder will need to maintain a good knowledge of emerging policies from Government departments e.g. NHS requirements.
To ensure DHU is compliant with relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and organisational procedures through technical advice relating to energy, water and carbon management.
Develop DHU’s Sustainability policies/procedures to accord with legislation and to reflect new and developing guidelines/technologies.
Regularly monitor and be prepared to report on energy and water consumption, costs and carbon footprint data to the Executive Directors.
Responsible for producing detailed reports summarizing status on issues, appraising outcomes, and providing progress reports to various committees within DHU.
Collate as required a range of information and lead appropriate analysis to develop robust business cases and contribute to project products.
Analyse, interpret and present data to highlight issues, risks and support decision making.
Essential Skills:
Degree level qualification or post graduate diploma in an energy or environment, carbon, sustainability related subject or equivalent significant experience of energy/carbon management in a large organization, including energy efficiency/carbon reduction project management.
A current full UK Driving Licence.
Knowledge of NHS energy, water and carbon guidance (i.e. HTM 07-02 and Estates ‘Net Zero’ Carbon Delivery.
Plan), UK energy legislation (including UK ETS and Climate Change Act) and NHS Policies and procedures (i.e. Infection, Prevention & Control and Health & Safety).
Experience of site-wide, multidepartment, energy/carbon auditing, including policy compliance and identification of feasible conservation measures /energy efficiency.
Excellent verbal, IT and written communication skills, including the ability to present effectively to a wide-ranging audience.
Standard keyboard skills for data input and manipulation.
Ability to analyse complex facts and situations and develop a range of options.
Must be able to prioritise own work effectively and be able to direct activities of others where required.
Must be able to use initiative to decide relevant actions and make recommendations with the aim of improving deliverables and compliance to policies.
Desirable Skills:
Master’s level qualification in an energy or environment, carbon, sustainability related subject
Professional registration i.e. Chartered Environmentalist or Chartered Energy Manager
Demonstrable persuasive communication skills, with the ability to engage large numbers of staff in conservation actions/energy reduction.
Experience in implementation of low carbon/sustainability/carbon reduction/renewable energy strategies, particularly in healthcare settings.
