Study Skills Tutor

Are you passionate about providing valuable support to students with Specific Learning Difficulties such as Dyslexia and ADHD? Do you enjoy the idea of working in a flexible environment appeal to you? In the role of a Study Skills tutor, you will support students with Specific Learning Difficulties at The University of Aberdeen in hybrid and face to face settings.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored one-to-one support with students you have been assigned to based on their specific learning difficulties. This should include goal setting and time scales for achieving these goals.
  • Assist students with organisational skills such as time management, creating action plans to work towards deadlines, and diary implementation.
  • Helping to address memory, attention, and numeracy difficulties that students may face when studying in a Higher Education setting.
  • Help with their research skills by assisting them to access ranges of resources, and helping to decipher between appropriate and inappropriate sources.
  • Support with the correct usage of references and compiling bibliographies.
  • Provide help with writing skills, and how to structure their work.
  • Encourage students to build on existing strengths so they are able to develop their independence.
  • Support with comprehension skills, such as helping your students understand key phrases, inferring information from text, reading strategies, paraphrasing and summarising.
  • Behave in a confidential and professional manner at all times with students.
  • Work closely with Randstad and ensure any concerns regarding students are communicated immediately.

Requirements

  • Must be able to provide face to face support, blended at the least (If you can only provide remote support, unfortunately, you will not be considered).
  • Have experience in supporting students with Specific Learning Difficulties such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, as well as ADHD, Autism and Mental Health.
  • Aware of university life and complexities of academic studies.
  • Relevant degree and qualifications that would help to support you in this role.
  • Organisational skills - to be able to manage your workload of multiple students.
  • Be reliable and punctual at all times when having sessions with students.
  • Accurate spelling and grammar skills.
  • Have an understanding on how to use platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams etc.
  • Ideally, you will hold a PGCE or PGDE Qualification.

  • The Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS) - Full or associate membership.
  • British Dyslexia Association (BDA) - Full professional membership.
  • The Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher Education (ADSHE) - Professional membership.
  • Dyslexia Guild Associate Member (ADG) o Associate Member (ADG FE/HE) o Member (MDG).
