About the Role:
This role is a hybrid working position working remotely and from our Birmingham Digital Hub.
You will be
creating
the brand-new
SRE
Squad within the Platforms team
within Enterprise
D
igital whose goal is to make life for the development teams in other parts of the business easier by
providing
a set of low friction, fully managed cloud capabilities and abstracting these complexities away from the developer – allowing them to focus on code and not infrastructure.
As a hands-on Engineering Manager of the Operations and SRE team, your code will lead by example. Your team will also
be responsible for
the stability, security
,
availability
and performance
of
these cloud capabilities
which will be built
by other teams within the Platforms team
.
You and your team will also collaborate
closely
with
engineering teams across the tribes
-building AI OPS tooling to support the
business.
Responsibilities:
Lead and grow a team of engineers
and SRE’s
in ensuring our platform and the applications running on it are stable and secure ensuring
systems
remain
available
with no drops in performance.
Create and Lead strategy for planned outages and DR
exercises
Implement monitoring and self-healing capabilities for systems to minimise downtime.
Provide
strategic and operational oversight for Enterprise software product
development
Work closely with business leaders to develop short and long-term strategies.
Develop and drive execution on 6 months and 1-year road
maps
Drive innovation,
establish
new approaches
in improving
productivity
Establish a metrics-based organisation, develop critical operational
metrics
and push for continuous improvement.
Remove manual implementation from workflows and look to automate as much as possible.
Skills:
10+ years hands-on software engineering experience delivering and managing software in production in a commercial setting, ideally in enterprise environments.
A good level
of commercial
expertise
in core Java and Spring Boot
5+ years of experience
in an SRE/DevOps or other similar role
5+ years of experience with agile systems development methodologies
3+ years' experience with cloud computing on AWS.
Passion for automation with a reluctance for manual implementation
Experience with DevOps tools,
process, and culture.
Experience setting and managing Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
Experience with ITIL processes

The Software Engineering Manager coordinates the execution of the engineering strategy and roadmap that supports BT's commercial strategy through cross functional business partnering and the participation of a team that pursues innovation as well as engineering excellence.What you’ll be doing1. Manages and coaches teams of software engineers driving the engineering organisation's ability to deliver high quality code on time and on budget and implementing means of bringing measurability as well as predictability to the engineering organisation's capabilities2. Oversees the execution of technical decisions, technology choices and architecture for a wide range of high-performance products, capabilities, and platforms, effectively balancing short term impact with long-term transformation3. Monitors, manages and ensures timely releases from teams by driving compliance with key release quality metrics4. Consults on complex and strategic issues using advanced technical knowledge, across wider industry and/or specific sectors, and develops bespoke or leading edge, technically complex solutions (e.g., relating to new, untested technology and/or large-scale impact of products)5. Drives the implementation of the defined technical roadmap to meet the needs of the business, engineering team, and partner teams6. Implements, engineering and operational excellence initiatives, implementing metrics and processes for regular assessment and improvement7. Takes a managerial and influencer role in the software engineering function, implementing the technical vision and the pursuit of innovations regarding new technologies, platforms and applications8. Develops 'best-in-class' engineering for services by ensuring that the services and the components are well-defined and modularised, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored and reusable9. Oversees the implementation of new architectures, standards, and methods for large-scale enterprise systems, proactively removing blockers from the team's work10. Researches, designs and writes new software and performs deep dive data analysis, to identify issues and implement ways to improve working processes within the area of software engineering responsibility, such as avoiding and reducing technical debt11. Performs complex debugging and troubleshooting of critical issues throughout the development process12. Supports the implementation of new architectures, standards, and methods for large-scale enterprise systems13. Coordinates the evaluation and implementation of high-quality tools and automation processes to support continuous delivery and developer productivity14. Builds and maintains an engineering culture that fosters innovation and creativity while delivering high quality products with predictability and reliability15.
