Unlock your passions @ Haughley and Thurston Vets
Haughley and Thurston Vets is a rural practice set in the heart of Suffolk. Suffolk is a beautiful county, it benefits from beaches and woodlands, and lovely farming areas, very little hills or mountains but amazing skies and sunsets. It lacks big cities, but it has great towns and we are situated near to Bury St Edmunds, which is full of history and some very nice bars and restaurants. There is train stations near both surgeries and has easy links to London and Cambridge.
We currently have 5 experienced Vets and 1 first year graduate. We have Vets with interests in many areas such as Imaging, Dental, ECC, Opthalmology, Sustainability and Antimicrobial Reduction. We also work with visiting specialists in Orthopedics and more complex Soft Tissue Surgery and Imaging. We also have 7 RVNS and 2 SVNs. We are a wonderful team over the two sites and we take client care, patient wellbeing and staff morale seriously.
As a practice we aim to support all staff as much as possible and organise full team events such as Christmas and Summer Parties and days out where possible. We also have open and honest conversations with our staff where needed and try to offer support to them. In the last year Haughley and Thurston Vets have been a leading force in starting a local Veterinary Society, where we can meet people in the area but outside of the group, it has offered great new networking opportunities and training for all staff.
Although we are rural, we are not old fashioned. We strive to keep up to date with all the latest ideas and we work hard to have new and innovative equipment. We have routine equipment such as x-ray, ultrasound and simple endoscope. We also have dental imaging and we have a Dental certificate holder. We routinely do more complex orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries with a visiting specialist and some more in house too. All of our surgeries have routine monitoring of Pulse Ox, Capnography and Blood Pressure. We have visiting ultra sonographer who helps with echo's and more in depth scanning but do have staff members with an interest in scanning themselves. We work with some other IVC practices locally to develop ophthalmology and exotic work. We are also a rabbit friendly surgery and part of the chicken vet network.
Your normal hours of work are 40 hours per week, 4/5 days a week. Due to the particular needs of the business we need to operate a rota system, therefore there are no normal times of work applicable to you and your daily hours, start and finish times will vary from time to time on a rota system. The rota operates Monday to Friday inclusive. In addition, you may also be required to participate in a Saturday rota.
We aim for all graduates to be assigned a mentor who they work with at least once a week. This person is their go to mentor but the rest of the team are here and happy to help. We try to take your development at your pace and find things you are interested in. That said, for things you are finding harder we look for ways to work to make this better. Each graduate starts with 30 minute consults and each consult is followed by 15 minutes to write notes or seek help. Gradually the breaks become less frequent and the consults shorter, but we are guided by how you feel. Surgery wise, we like people to get hands on but not alone someone more experienced will always be around. We also like to discuss new ideas and see what current thinking has been.
