Company Overview:
BugBiome discovers biopesticides from crop microbiomes. We focus on beneficial microbes that naturally protect plants from invasive insects through their metabolites. By harnessing the natural synergies between plants and their native microorganisms, we develop targeted crop protection technologies. Our solutions reduce pest damage and decrease yield losses, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional pesticides. We isolate and characterise microbial communities to find beneficial microorganisms and bioactive metabolites. Our proprietary screening process evaluates these microbes against various pests and progresses them through biopesticide testing to bring them to market.
Role Summary:
Seeking an enthusiastic scientist to join our team and lead Research and Development and support current laboratory staff. This fast-paced role offers a unique opportunity to be involved in various aspects of microbiology, entomology and molecular biology. You will be the scientific lead on projects that are at the forefront of scientific discovery, playing a crucial role in the development of sustainable and effective biopesticide solutions. Direct reporting to “C” level management and influence the R+D direction of the company.
Main responsibilities:
Lead the development and implementation of research strategies to discover and optimise microbial-based biopesticides, contributing intellectually to a range of projects.
Spearhead the movement of promising biopesticides from lab to field trials.
Oversee laboratory operations, including design and execution of experiments, data analysis, and interpretation to achieve project deliverables.
Lead and mentor a team of scientists and researchers, fostering a collaborative and innovative laboratory environment.
Stay updated with the latest scientific advancements and regulatory requirements in the biopesticide industry.
Ensure compliance with all safety, biosecurity, and regulatory requirements in the laboratory and in field trials.
To manage time effectively and efficiently to achieve BugBiome’s milestones.
To write and maintain accurate records of the research being undertaken.
To perform troubleshooting experiments when required.
To perform data analysis and critical interpretation of data.
To prepare written summaries and deliver presentations on the research undertaken.
Other responsibilities:
Drive innovation by encouraging out of the box thinking to achieve applied solutions and knowledge transfer
Develop scientific priorities in response to emerging environmental challenges and opportunities, and in alignment with the mission and strategic plan of BugBiome
As in early-stage companies, to carry out any other tasks or duties within the postholder’s capability as requested by the Company to meet its needs
Key skills/ experience required:
PhD in Microbiology, Entomology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biopesticides or similar (Master's with significant industrial experience will be considered).
Experience in culturing microorganisms, molecular biology and/or entomology.
Independent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, strong communication and organisational abilities.
Self-motivated, enthusiastic team player.
Excellent communication skills
A strong commitment to integrity in science and attention to detail
The final candidate may have the literal qualifications summarised above or an eclectic background that provides the insight, leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and management, communication, organisational skills required to excel in this position.
Desirable Experience:
Industrial experience (in crop protection, sustainable agriculture, formulation or pest monitoring) - ideally biopesticide discovery
Experience of crop science or pesticide research.
Skilled in culturing diverse microbial species, applying molecular biology techniques, and understanding microbial communities through sequencing (Illumina or ONT).
Experience in metabolomics, insect or field work experience.
Proficiency in bioinformatics and statistics.
Experience of operating bioreactors and bioprocess development.
Experience communicating complex scientific information to a variety of technical and lay audiences.
Demonstrated transdisciplinary experience taking a systems approach to understand and address complex challenges and opportunities
Ability to provide organisational leadership in a leadership role and build consensus.
Project management experience. Efficient multitasking and project prioritisation skills.
Strong leadership skills and experience managing a team of scientists and research projects.
