You're not just joining a team; you're becoming part of a collective force helping to build and operate a railway fit for the next 200 years!Main ResponsibilityTo manage the detailed design requirements of the Base Station Subsystem (BSS) for GSM-R, this includes the design of new sections of railway and the upgrade of lines to provide ERTMS - It includes validation on any change of the design, whilst conforming to Network Rail safety standards and GSM-R system operational requirements and standards.What will you be doing?Manage the RF Design and Optimisation team and act as Design Authority within DDaT for all RF aspects of GSM-R.Manage the overall design of the Base Station Sub-system (BSS), from cell planning to final site configurations and testing. This includes the design of repeaters for Network Rail projects and renewals in a safe and environmentally responsible manner to time, cost and quality.Manage the development of BSS design guidelines.Identify and define configuration/provisioning data and datafill for BSS configuration.Manage the optimisation of the network including handover and cell re-selection & network performance.Manage test requirements for verification of the BSS against the design.Manage the investigation and development of technical solutions for occurrences of reported poor GSM-R performance and faults into any BSS derived network element whilst maintaining change control of the BSS.Manage the investigation and identification of network performance issues and review how to optimise the site or radio network elements (physical elements and parameters) so that resolution can be achieved.Manage all areas of the business requiring GSM-R technical input and future innovations around the introduction of new radio technology, confirming that the current network and services are maintained and enhanced accordingly.Undertake the role of Designer/CRE/CEM in accordance with NR/L2/INI/02009 in relation to RF Design & Optimisation.Provide technical Tier 4 support to Network Rail on complex faults and network outages. Working with suppliers to make sure technical issues are controlled and where possible mitigated.The Ideal CandidateSignificant and proven experience of 2G cellular systems design, planning, implementation and optimisation.Considerable experience in radio frequency planning, capacity dimensioning and mobility management, including neighbour cell and LAC planning, BTS dimensioning, site/cell hardware design, and software/ parameter configuration of a cellular system.Ability to analyse complex data compiled from a wide range of sources and tools related to the radio environment and understand content in relation to design. Ability to complete statistical analysis and deliver comprehensive solutions.Competent user of multi vendors’ wireless planning and optimisation tools and their use to design and optimise a radio network.Knowledge of radio coverage in tunnels and other enclosures specific to the railway.Good working knowledge of MS Office and other mainstream computer tools and applications to create and review technical documents and papers.Ability to lead a team and interact with other parts of the business.Good communicator with the ability to present and participate in technical meetings and discussions.Relevant Engineering DegreeMembership of an appropriate Professional InstitutionKnowledge of present and new wireless technologies.Experience of railway telecoms and knowledge of Railway Safety Management.Project Management certification.We are committed to a diverse workplace enriched with representation from diverse cultures, backgrounds and skills.
