About the Opportunity:
You will work on a range of experimental and desk-based consultancy projects for customers including power generators, owners of radioactive wastes and nuclear materials, and aerospace developers, both in the UK and overseas. Our established client portfolio includes EDF (UK and France), Sellafield Ltd, Rolls Royce, Airbus, Teledyne, e2v, and ONDRAF-NIRAS. The work includes a variety of activities across the areas of materials assessment and testing and, more broadly, support to our consultancy activities. Duties include:
Deploying desk-based and lab/analytical capabilities to assess, rationalise and document solutions for a variety of materials science, radiation physics and chemistry problems in the field of irradiated materials assessment, testing, and radioactive waste management, including definition, design of test programmes, and subsequent data analysis and interpretation.
Routine access to our in-house gamma-irradiation facility based at Harwell to oversee the setup and execution of key experiments/tests and to enable access to the facility by key clients.
Demonstrating and promoting the highest levels of health and safety in all aspects of the role.
Leading the production of high-quality technical reports, as main author and/or coordinating other technical resources.
Reviewing and assimilating data/information and technical reports produced by other members of the team.
Leading successful interactions with clients, including presentation of key results and their interpretation in the context of client needs.
Leading business development activities (including competitive bidding) in relevant technical areas.
Carrying out project management and project control activities.
Taking ownership of agreed work areas, and delivering work to agreed timescales, quality and cost.

Here's What You'll Need:
A degree in a relevant physical science or engineering discipline OR equivalent training/experience.
A PhD in a Materials Science, Physical Chemistry, or Applied Physics OR equivalent working experience.
Outstanding desk-based analytical skills with focus on materials science, chemistry or physics, ideally in the field of polymeric materials, and/or irradiated materials.
Fundamental grasp of radiation effects on materials, and nuclear radiation physics.
Strong track record of demonstrating professional experience in deploying technical/scientific skills for a variety of technical challenges across different material, chemical and/or physical science problems.
Numerate with excellent technical writing skills, demonstrated by recent publication of technical work in industry reports and/or scientific literature.
Flexible, innovative, and keen to develop and take ownership of client portfolio, ideally including demonstration of previous commercial skills.
Adaptable, able to work on and/or coordinate a number of varied projects at the same time, prioritising as appropriate.
Able to lead and work within multi-disciplinary teams.
Expertise in polymer science, and/or irradiated materials science would be highly desirable.
Previous experience working within irradiation facilities would be desirable.
