Role: Senior / Principal Electrical Engineer / Systems Engineer
Location: Gateshead
Role Type: Permanent
Salary: £40k - £55k depending on experience
The Role:
The Senior / Principal Engineer at with our client is the lead on all technical and engineering matters, overseeing design, development, delivery, and in-service support across a range of systems, including Communications Information Services (CIS), Fighting Vehicles (FV), Electronic Warfare (EW), and other defence and security-related fields. This role involves managing and working within internal project teams and engaging with customers and suppliers as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering Process Management: Oversee and develop the existing engineering processes, including design reviews, safety boards, and the management of engineering changes.
Leadership: Fulfil the role of Deputy Chairman on the Engineering Committee, supporting the Defence Operations Manager as Chairman.
Team Management: Line manage a team of technical staff, ensuring adherence to company processes.

Skills & Attributes:
Experience in as Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Systems Engineering
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong technical capability with an awareness of new developments in engineering fields such as EW, Communications, or Product Development
Security Clearance (SC) or the ability to obtain it
Valid UK drivers licence
Ability to lead client meetings and present visual presentations
Competent in using configuration management applications
Willingness to deploy off-site as required
Experience & Knowledge:
Preferably experienced in the defence and security industry, understanding the relationship between Prime Contractors, the UK Ministry of Defence, and SMEs
Proven ability to deliver solutions within time, cost, and quality constraints
Knowledge of safety-related legislation applicable to defence projects
Qualifications:
Academic:
Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) with at least three years of professional experience in relevant fields such as Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Systems Engineering
Or Higher National Diploma (HND) with seven years of professional experience
Professional:
Membership in the Institution for Engineering & Technology (MIET) or a similar professional body
Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status or higher professional accreditation
Encouragement and support for progression to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
Desirable:
Qualifications in Working Safely or Managing Safely from the Institution for Occupational Health & Safety (IOSH)
Specific Responsibilities:
Provide day-to-day technical and engineering consultancy
Liaise with clients, suppliers, Project Managers, senior managers, and other stakeholders
Manage and approve business expenses, overtime, and leave for subordinate staff
Conduct appraisals and identify training needs for subordinate staff
Authorise documents and drawings relevant to the designated field/product/project
Ensure high standards and adherence to company processes in engineering output
Lead various reviews and provide technical advice to other departments
Act as Bid Manager when required, providing technical input into bids
Additional Requirements:
Deputise for the Defence Operations Manager as needed
Domestic and occasional overseas travel may be required
Capable of attaining and maintaining Security Clearance (SC) with the UK NSVS
Participate in the supervisor factory security rota
