Job Description
Job Title:
Principal Medical Writer
Location:

Role Purpose:
As a Principal Medical Writer, you will lead the scientific strategy and medical writing content for key accounts, working closely with the Programme Director. You will translate client visions and objectives into engaging, behavior-changing activities across various channels, overseeing processes, resources, and training within the medical writing team.
Key Responsibilities:
Scientific Strategy and Content Leadership:
Lead the scientific strategy and medical writing content for key accounts.
Develop in-depth understanding of clinical data, therapeutic areas, and brand/client objectives to guide strategic planning and content development.
Lead brainstorming sessions for proposals, new projects, and innovative solutions.
Create content or guide junior writers to deliver compelling stories aligned with brand/client objectives across multiple channels.
Advise on different writing styles tailored to various audiences and channels.
Collaborate with programme teams to ensure timely and budget-conscious content delivery.
Review junior writers' work and provide constructive feedback.
Provide on-site (live and virtual) support as required.
Attend scientific meetings and congresses (live and virtual) to enhance knowledge.
Client and KOL Engagement:
Lead client and Key Opinion Leader (KOL) discussions.
Act as the primary expert in data and therapy areas within the business unit, maintaining high-level conversations with clients and KOLs.
Confidently discuss and challenge KOLs on editorial content and approaches.
Attend client meetings and pitches, leading discussions on scientific strategy and content.
Identify and recommend additional programs or extensions to clients in collaboration with the Programme Director.
Take a lead role in pitch meetings, conveying scientific strategy and content approach, and contributing significantly during proposal writing.
Writing Process Management:
Manage writing processes, adhering to existing protocols and integrating with editorial processes.
Identify deviations from writing processes and propose solutions or amended approaches.
Develop new processes to ensure high-quality content development.
Resource Management and Forward Planning:
Regularly review writing capacity and recommend strategies to meet deadlines using internal or freelance resources.
Advise on recruitment needs and interview potential writers as required.
Effectively brief freelancers on client objectives, brand strategy, and programme specifics.
Provide and oversee feedback to freelancers, managing quality issues.
Line Management, Development, and Support:
Line manage writers, providing regular feedback and support.
Design and deliver training sessions for writers.
Develop and deliver induction programs for new writers.
Offer on-the-job mentoring and training for the writing/editorial team.
Identify and recommend external training support when necessary.
Financial Management:
Ensure accurate estimates for writing support and reflect work done in reconciliations.
Communicate regularly with the Programme team about factors impacting estimates, timesheets, and budget adherence.

Qualifications:
Degree in life sciences
Medical writing experience in a Med Comms agency
Proven leadership and team management experience.
Strong understanding of clinical data and therapeutic areas.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
