Role Description.

They require an experienced aeronautical design engineer to help to lead our team in research, development, and production focused tasks.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in leading mechanical engineers in both rapid prototyping and design for manufacture-oriented tasks, with extensive evidence of their own successful and innovative designs.

  • Working closely with our CTO and other design engineers to help to map the teams longer term goals and timelines.

  • Building & reviewing 3D models in SolidWorks (or a complementary CAD package) of large and small composite components, structural assemblies, and associated metallic & plastic components.

  • Assuring designs for manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability.

  • Vetting selection of the right production processes for our applications, driving the development and inspection of a variety of shop drawings/CAD for vendors to ensure that parts are properly toleranced and meet performance goals.

  • Working with Flight teams and our vehicle integration engineers to specify component and system tests.

  • Transition of prototype mechanical designs into production.

  • Interface with other engineering groups on collaborative projects to deconflict integration issues and execute against the integration plan.

  • Implementing and maintaining processes to ensure the mechanical design team are working efficiently and to best practices.

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in an applicable engineering field, or equivalent work experience.

  • 3+ years of Aerospace or Mechanical engineering experience ideally directly pertaining to vehicle design or robotic systems, preferably in the UAV space.

  • Experience as a manager, team leader or a very strong individual contributor of high-performing Engineering teams with 3-to-10 (or more) personnel.

  • First-hand working knowledge of materials, tooling & fixtures, resin systems, precision machining, and manufacturing processes for composite structures.

  • CAD experience (SolidWorks), and adept use of hand tools, power tools, and machining equipment are necessities for this role.

  • Evidence of successful and novel designs created using rapid prototyping techniques.

  • Experience designing for a wide variety of production processes including but not limited to lathe, 3-6 axis machining, water jet, laser cut, punch, bending, welding, casting, and 3D.

The desire to: work within a fast-paced start-up environment that expects excellence and embraces diversity. Build teams and processes from the ground up. Get their hands dirty. See their aircraft go to market.

  • Experience developing parts and structures for weight-constrained applications.

  • Experience developing parts and structures involving large structural composite vehicles/robots/etc.

  • Experience developing aircraft, vehicles, or robots utilizing high power drives or actuators.

  • Exposure to designs including electro-mechanical devices.
