Senior Manager – Transport Strategy and Architecture

Company DescriptionReporting to the Head of RAN and Transport Strategy and Architecture, this role is a leadership role that must provide a clear vision and multi-year strategy for the Transport domain in accordance with the business objectives, the Network and IT operational requirements and the advances in technology across all technology domains.This role will ensure that the Transport strategy is translated into a Transport architecture that aligns with the short-term and long-term needs to operate the 3UK Network including the IT domain in an efficient way. This means defining an Transport architecture with the necessary platforms and tools to monitor, troubleshoot and fix Network issues in an automated way that ultimately result in delivering the best possible customer journey to our subscribers.You will need to maintain awareness of the latest industry trends in terms of Network and IT technologies and evaluates the needs to manage these new technologies from an operations perspective. You will maintains close relationships with the rest of the RAN & Transport Strategy and Architecture functions, the wider Strategy and Architecture teams (Core and Cloud Infrastructure and OSS), the E2E Network Design team, the IT architecture unit, the Network Design & Delivery teams, the Service Quality Management teams and Technical Services. Work closely with Regulatory and Government Liaison function to deliver to business needs. Works closely with commercial and business functions to deliver to business needs. Contribute to the motivation and development of capabilities of the RAN and Transport Strategy and Architecture teamJob Description• Develop and document the multi-year strategy plan and roadmap for the Transport domain with special emphasis on capacity, reach, performance, functionality and cost management.
• Translate the multi-year strategy into detailed high level architecture plans documented in a clear and comprehensive way. Ensure continuous improvement of the architecture plans and documentation as the strategy changes and the Network evolves.
• Define and communicate the strategy for Three UK in relation to Next Generation networks, including SDN (Software Defined Networks), NFV, etc.
• Communicate the strategy and architecture to the different domains (RAN, Transport, Core, Infra, OSS and Technical Services) in a clear way and ensure that the respective deliveries align with the strategy and vice-versa, while using their feedback to rework the strategy. This requires a frequent and close engagement with the teams.
• Develop the CAPEX and OPEX models for the Transport architecture and support and influence the annual network budgeting exercise.
• Assist in the investigation of Transport issues when required and evaluate the implications on the architecture and strategy applying changes if necessary.
• Maintain full awareness of the new features and technologies from the vendors across all domains and evaluates their implications from an Transport perspective.
• Ensure that the latest industry trends are followed, evaluated and captured from an Transport perspective into the Transport Strategy and Architecture.
• Follow and liaise with external partners for collaboration and explorations of new business opportunities that impact 3UK’s Transport strategy.
• Provide leadership and guidance in tendering process and PoCs.Support business/commercial/marketing teams as necessary (marketing events, conferences, presales).Support and engage with Regulatory and Government Affairs as necessary to secure outcomes aligned to business goals.Work closely with the following Strategy and Architecture functions and teams: RAN, OSS, Core, Cloud Infrastructure, IT (BSS) and Technical Services.Support the annual budget planning exercise ensuring that not only the short-term but also the long-term strategy is captured as part of the annual budget to avoid delays in the operations of future services, features and architectures.Report regularly with progress updates to the Head of RAN and Transport Strategy and Architecture and support communication to the 3UK executive management team.Qualifications• Previous experience working as a leader/manager in a Strategy setting or Architectural role in a multi-domain, or single domain (including Transport) environment or an end to end solution design role including liaising and influencing at all levels and across domains within an organisation.
• Experience dealing with partners and managing Telco and non-Telco vendors. Strong skills in the development of technical requirements, evaluation of technical responses, definition of contractual requirements and negotiation. Will have experienced procuring and establishing contract for network equipment and services.
• Good knowledge of OSS, RAN, Core, Transmission/Transport, IP and end-to-end services (VoLTE, data).
• Ability to work in a fast paced changing environment that shows flexibility, resiliency, self-awareness and ability to support other team members.
• Will have a high level, broad end to end understanding of our business and its operational performance and be able to demonstrate knowledge of working in a service orientated environment.
• Experience contributing to governance frameworks as part of meeting and managing the definition of target architectures.
• Experience and understanding of ensuring target architectures comply with security and other regulatory policies.In-depth knowledge of Transport solutions (including; Microwave and Ethernet/IP access transport technologies, IP/MPLS and synchronisation solution and planning, Leased line solutions and providers) to support multiple technologies, including LTE and 5G.Good understanding of mobile based transmission networks in particular in a 3G / 4G / 5G network and Next Generation Networks, including SDN, NFV, etc.Knowledge of; IP & Security Solutions, IP addressing on a multiple site/size basis, TCP/IP technologies such as SMTP, DNS, SNMP, HTTP, HTTPs, Firewalls, Policy-based-security and Wider security tools, OSPF, QOS, NAT, VoIP, IP routing (including the use of virtual routing domains) and switching, MP-BGP, RIPv2, MPLS, network management platforms, SNMP & Enterprise, Data Centre and Service provider IP NetworksAdditional InformationCompetitive annual salary, car cash allowance, a performance based annual bonus & an additional 'flexible allowance' to spend on additional benefits, topping up your pension, or to be added to your salary.Hybrid working between your home (2-3 days a week) and our brand new Reading HQ office at Green Park (2-3 days a week)28 days annual leave + 8 bank holidays + 3 personal days annually, which increases with length of servicePrivate Medical Insurance, Life Assurance and Income ProtectionFree mobile phone package & unlimited sim-cardFree on-site car parkingPlus lots more including well-being and learning & development benefits!Salary range for this role start's at £82,400, and exact salary will differ by job and experienceOur people make us who we are. At Three we have a hybrid working arrangement in place as standard for office based employees, where employees work from a mix of office based location and working from their home in the UK to carry on their role.
Excluding retail, core hours at Three are between 10:00 and 16:00, with operating hours between 08:00 & 18:30. This allows employees to have a start time between 08:00 and 10:00 and finish time between 16:00 and 18:30.
