The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) funds Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) as experimental medicine centres of excellence via competitive application every five years. Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) has recently been renewed over five years to provide experimental medicine infrastructure funding across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Cumbria.
Manchester BRC drives forward experimental medicine across a range of research themes which are grouped into four clusters: Inflammation, Cancer, High Burden Under Researched Conditions and Disease Complexity as areas where the region has demonstrable strength and which will work collaboratively to improve patient outcomes and embed, build and accelerate personalised health and care for all.
The post will support an MRC Experimental Medicine Grant embedded within the Respiratory theme of the BRC. This grant will assess the effects of disruption of the microbiota with broad-spectrum antibiotics on pulmonary immunity in humans. Pre-clinical data suggest antibiotic use promotes type 2 immunity in the lungs, aligned with epidemiological evidence linking asthma to antibiotic use in humans.Main duties of the jobTo assist with the planning, set up and implementation of the new research studies.Manage ethics and regulatory submissionsWork alongside Study Principal Investigators, assessing all aspects of study feasibility and risk.To be aware of and work within the guidelines for biomedical research set out in the Declaration of Helsinki.To ensure compliance with the guidelines for Good Clinical Practice as set out in the EU Directive for Clinical Trials.To follow standard operating procedures and study protocols.Facilitate, organise and carry out patient recruitmentIdentification and recruitment of participants to the relevant research studiesConfirming if participants are eligible for inclusion into research studies according to the study protocolWorking for our organisationMFT is England’s largest NHS Trust with a turnover of £2.6bn & is on a different scale than most other NHS Trusts.
