Job Description
Senior Scientist - Remediation
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of this role:
To assist, support and facilitate development the remediation Technical Team;
To ensure compliance with relevant site specifications, permits, licenses and monitoring conditions;
To support the project team in undertaking site and office based work from a technical aspect, such as design, implementation, and review / reassessment including providing constructive feedback;
To complete technical tender reviews, characterising site conditions to enable detailed scoping and pricing by the wider tender team;
Assist in the detailed scoping and pricing of tenders;
To assist and oversee the technical requirements of live projects to deliver project objectives;
To complete and review Technical Team deliverables, including report writing, regulatory liaison and documentation ;
To oversee waste disposal assessments and enquiries to ensure accordance with Waste Regulations;
To communicate with client, regulatory bodies and assist business development; and
To keep up-to-date with developments to legislation and good practice guidance.
JOB CONTENT
Tasks and Duties:
Undertaking site visits for auditing, compliance and Technical Team QA/QC purposes;
Ensuring live sites are compliant with regulatory and project specific requirements;
Undertaking and / or coordinating site investigation and remediation works including reporting;
Manage sampling and monitoring regimes and junior staff undertaking these activities to ensure compliance with environmental permits and any other site specific requirements;
Oversee waste classification assessments and co-ordination with waste facilities;
Review of permits, licences, consents and reports;
Preparing and reviewing validation / completion reports;
Directing technical tender review in order to develop CSMs;
Providing clear direction to technicians/scientists within the team;
Promoting inter-office working relationships between business units; and
Liaising with clients, external contacts, and regulatory bodies when required.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
·Qualifications and Training
Essential:
Relevant academic qualifications.
8 years of relevant industry experience.
Desirable:
Chartered (or working towards) with an appropriate professional body;
WAMITAB qualified;
Academic/Trade press publication history;
Other relevant industry training e.g. Waste assessment training; and
Training on relevant computer software
·Knowledge
Essential:
Experience of working in the environmental industry, ideally with a minimum of 8 years working in contaminated land industry;
Practical understanding of LQRM (formerly CLR11) and Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, as amended;
Practical understanding of legislation, guidance documents and codes of practice relevant to the industry;
Practical understanding of CL:AIRE Definition of Waste Code of Practice (DoWCoP);
Detailed interpretation of analytical data with respect to contaminated land risk assessment, options appraisal and site validation;
Understanding of contaminated land reporting requirements with respect to the Planning Regime; and
Conceptual understanding of available remediation technologies.
Desirable:
Knowledge of waste assessment in accordance with WM3;
Experience of DQRA modelling;
Experience of geotechnical design and earthworks validation;
Understanding of wider regulations with respect to contaminated land and remediation;
Practical understanding of Waste Recovery Permits;
Commercial, operational and / or preconstruction understanding; and
Interpretation of geotechnical information and/or geotechnical project experience.

Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively with internal and external contacts, including imparting technical ideas to technical and non-technical persons;
Flexible approach to office and site works;
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues;
Ability to complete report writing to a high standard and review reports as required;
Ability to review the output of junior members of the Technical Team; and
Ability to feedback positively and negatively to junior members of the Technical Team.
Desirable:
Experience of liaising directly with regulatory bodies and / or clients;
Line Management experience;and
Project Management experience.
