Job Purpose
As a Senior Database SRE, your role entails close collaboration with, fellow engineers, internal customer teams, and other departments within the organisation to ensure the ongoing security, reliability, and performance of our databases, cloud platforms & infrastructure. You will do this by quality assuring developer code, as developers utilise our critical databases to deliver new features to Sky’s customers. You will be actively involved in hands-on tasks, contributing to the delivery of products and projects alongside customer teams. Leveraging a suite of tools including but not limited to Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub, Grafana, Concourse CI, and other AWS cloud-native technologies, you will ensure the seamless implementation and support of solutions and foster a culture of knowledge sharing within the SRE team, guiding, and mentoring junior members to bolster their expertise and proficiency in managing complex systems.
What You’ll DoStrategy & Leadership
Work closely with the Principal Platform SRE to ensure technical solutions align with departmental goals, and that solutions meet both short-term objectives and long-term vision.
Contributes to and leads new designs, architectures and standards for large-scale distributed systems spanning multiple territories and regions.
Communication & Delivery
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful delivery and support of all Cloud, Windows, Unix, Storage or Database product or project deliverables.
Communicate work status regularly and clearly.
Continuous Improvement & Reliability
Continuously improve the security, availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of our internal or customer-facing services.
Perform quality assurance reviews against new developer features.
Perform general database maintenance and patching across Couchbase, Oracle or MySQL databases
Utilise your proficiency across scripting languages to automate tasks and streamline support and delivery operations.
Identify opportunities for improving customer self-service capabilities and either delivering these internally or relating them to the platform enablement teams.
Support
Engage in troubleshooting, service capacity planning and demand forecasting, software performance analysis and system tuning.
Engage with Platform Support teams to assist with 24/7 on-call incident resolution (rota-based) and engage various teams including 3rd parties for support escalation.
Be aware of wider issues beyond technology such as financial and organisational; articulating and escalating where necessary.
What You’ll Bring
Required:
Advanced knowledge and experience in an SRE/DevOps related field.
Advanced knowledge of Oracle Database Administration on Linux with strong focus on PL/SQL. Oracle 11g – 19c .
Experience reviewing Oracle SQL query, DDL, DML including stored procedure, packages before deployment.
Demonstratable proficiency in designing and implementing infrastructure and public cloud solutions.
Hands-on experience in at least one of Oracle, MySql/Galera or Couchbase including HA, Clustering, Optimisation etc
Good knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, Bash, PowerShell.
Experience with AWS container service technologies such as EKS, ECS and Fargate as well as container orchestration and container runtime technologies such as Docker and CRI-O.
Experience of administering AWS services such as IAM, Systems Manager, DXGW, IGW and TGW.
Experience with Linux administration, including command line interface and shell scripting.
Proven experience of working within Agile methodologies such as SCRUM and Kanban successfully.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot issues in a complex environment.
Experience of implementing monitoring solutions and metric driven alerting using products such as Grafana.
Proven experience of working alongside development teams leveraging GitOps and CI/CD principles, practices, and capabilities.
Familiarity with the implementation and support of secrets management solutions such as AWS Secrets Manager, CyberArk and HashiCorp Vault.
Good understanding of networking concepts including switches, routers, firewalls, and load balancers.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with one or more cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration with internal teams and stakeholders.
Good understanding of security frameworks such as NIST/SOC 2/ISO/IEC.
Proficiency in documentation and presentation to effectively communicate technical solutions
Preferred:
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. (Not essential if you have related experience or aptitude).
Relevant certifications from AWS.
Certification in Oracle Database Administration or Oracle Database PL/SQL Developer Certified Professional.
Excellent scripting knowledge with proven development experience.
