About UK Assessment & Qualifications: We are responsible for the delivery of nearly 4 million examination results per annum, including A-Level, GCSE, BTEC and T-levels for students in UK and International centres. Our in-house systems process every learner from registration to marking and certification, in a highly regulated business. We currently operate a hybrid estate of predominantly bespoke systems, with an ongoing strategic transformation programme to migrate from on-prem to cloud based, cost effective, scalable, and resilient services.
About the Job
The position is for a Senior Database Developer, who has experience working with large data focused projects, and whose responsibility is around the transformation of data from legacy systems to modern cloud microservice based applications, along with working towards better methods of exploiting this data in terms of analytics and reporting.
Currently we are in the middle of a large programme to transform a legacy estate to AWS, and therefore there is a large amount of data hosted in platforms such as Oracle and SQL server that needs to be linked in with new microservices, using CDC technology, along with making this and new microservice mastered data available for both end user reporting and downstream consumption of other data platforms.
This role involves working with business SME's, product owners, architects, and developers, hence excellent communication and analysis skills are required. There will also be attendance to various senior stakeholder meetings to explain project progress, design ideas and decisions etc, so good communication & planning skills are essential, with the ability to put things into non-technical terms for the wider audience.
About You
This would suit someone with a background in complex data transformation projects, from legacy to cloud preferably, and who is looking to work on fast moving projects and contribute to design decisions. A proven track record in delivering projects is an advantage.
Key Skills & Experience
Proficiency in one or more database systems such as Amazon Aurora MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, DynamoDB, etc.
Expert level hands-on experience in designing, developing, and maintaining complex SQL queries, stored procedures to support various business applications.
Design, implement, and maintain scalable and high-performance database solutions.
Experience with data modelling tools and implementation of database schemas, ensuring optimal performance, data integrity, and scalability.
Perform advanced performance tuning and optimization of database systems.
Implement and maintain database monitoring solutions to proactively identify and address potential issues.
Proven experience of implementing different indexing strategies to improve query performance.
Develop scripts and automation tools to streamline database management tasks.
Familiarity with version control systems for database schema changes (e.g., Git).
Knowledge of AWS DMS, Lambda, S3, Step Functions, CloudWatch, Redshift, Glue, Event Bridge.
Change Data Capture understanding.
CI/CD - Pipeline setup and repository (Bitbucket) knowledge.
Automated testing design and setup.
Experience with large-scale data environments.
Data Warehousing concepts, design and loading strategies.
Experience with Integration / Ingestions of data sources into a Data Lake / Data Platforms.
Excellent organisational skills, proactive, self-starter with a curious approach to data and its value.
Microservice architecture understanding.
AWS SNS\SQS pub/sub/queue concepts.
JIRA - Kanban Boards, agile methodology.
Working with product management, product owners, data architects, business stakeholders.
Excellent Communication & Planning.

Job Location and Hours
The role is aligned to our Bangalore or Chennai offices in India, working a 45 hour week, or our Manchester, Rotherham, or Oxford offices in the UK, working a 37.5 hour week. Our Rotherham office is located at Junction 1 of the M18.
All our roles are hybrid working; our current policy requires our team to visit their base office no more than once a week, and with the possibility of occasional business travel to other Pearson sites. Candidates must be a suitable commute from their base office as our office presence policy may change to require more frequent presence in 2024.
For this role there is a requirement to provide occasional out of hours support during business critical periods.
