Job DescriptionSenior Art Book Editor – Maternity CoverOverview:HENI Publishing specialises in beautifully produced art publications. Created in collaboration with the artist or author, our bespoke titles range from major trade publications to catalogue raisonnés, artists' books and limited editions. HENI has published with some of the most renowned names in the art world, including Gerhard Richter, Francis Bacon and Gilbert & George, and has collaborated with world leading institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum and Tate, London.The RoleWorking as part of a small team, the Senior Editor oversees the editorial process, for a number of titles simultaneously, from initial concept through to print. It is a key role that working with artists, authors, design, production and editorial freelancers.The role reports into the Executive Commissioning Editor and will be based in Lexington Street, London. This is a 12-month fixed term contract to cover a period of maternity leave.Responsibilities include:Manage key relationships: with artists, authors, and other stakeholders, communicating progress and resolving problems.Schedules: set and manage, in conjunction with Production Manager.Budgets: manage editorial costs, in conject with Commissioning Editor.Editorial freelancers: enlist, brief, and manage as per requirements of project (e.g. external project editor, copy editors, proof-reader, indexer etc.).Text editing: oversee text editing process for books and related material – liaising with authors and artists on edits.Picture research: compiling and managing pictures lists, researching images and/or overseeing freelance picture editor, overseeing copyright permissions, managing picture costs in relation to allocated budget, managing flow of high-resolution image files between researcher/designer/production manager, editing and factchecking captions, organising and editing picture credits.Designer liaison: working out page plan in relation to contents according to allocated page extent, preparing materials and brief for designer (either in-house or external), reviewing initial design concepts, reviewing design layouts, monitoring page extent.Production: manage handovers of files to production manager for 1) colour proofing and 2) final text, and oversee ‘version control’ of live InDesign files.Proof reading: oversee process for book layouts, and other publishing documents, on paper and using InCopy/InDesign, and key in editorial corrections using InCopy/InDesign.Writing: preparing copy as required (cover copy, notes, contents pages, colophon, sign-post material etc).Cover: overseeing and signing-off of cover design/proofs.Final checks: checking lasers and plotters, keying in any editorial corrections and final sign-off proofs from printer regarding editorial content.Author questionnaires: organising for PR purposes.Editorial assistant: manage work of editorial assistant to support on books.The Ideal Candidate Profile:Strong academics would be advantageous, such as a university-level educated (preferably English or Art History).At least 5 years’ editorial experience in the art book publishing sector.Prior experience in managing an assistant would be advantageous.Knowledge and experience with InDesignExcellent organisational and administrative skills, with a collaborative and flexible approach to working with others.Self-motivated with strong multi-tasking skills and a keen eye for detail.Ability to communicate clearly and confidently, in writing and in person, with a good understanding of English grammar.Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, provide timely and accurate information.Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where priorities can change quickly.For any questions, please contact the recruitment team via ##### to the volume of applicants, unfortunately we might not be able to respond on an individual basis.
