Successful applicants will be based in Cardiff. At the National CBRN Centre based in Coventry, we bring together the emergency services to protect and prepare the UK against the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threat. It's a critical function and we're looking for a suitably experienced and qualified serving police officer as a Training Officer to deliver the Centre's CBRN training programme to Home Office forces, other organisations and Partner Agencies The role You'll work as part of the Radiological & Nuclear Inland Detection Capability (RNIDC) team working across three UK wide hub locations, providing a radiation and nuclear detection capability within Policing. The base location for the team is at the National CBRN Centre, Ryton on Dunsmore with two hubs situated in South Wales and North Yorkshire. This role is based at the South Wales hub.
Working as part of a new dedicated Radiation and Nuclear Detection Team developing knowledge, and understanding operational capability, you'll support the planning and integration of radiation and nuclear detection equipment into the protective security layer of policing for events. Additionally, the team will support the response to any radioactive or nuclear source that is out of regulatory control, either through loss or criminal intent, further supporting the Protect, Prepare and Pursue elements of the National Contest Strategy. You'll have the ability to enhance your profile through ongoing learning and technological advances, working closely with key partners across the CBRN landscape. Responsibilities Working as part of a team to develop and deliver a national Police radiological and nuclear inland detection capability. Operationally deploying with radiological and nuclear detection equipment within the Protect and Pursue elements of the National Contest Strategy across the UK. Working with host forces to deploy radiological and nuclear detection architecture into major public events. Developing a good knowledge of radiation and nuclear threats, detection capabilities and to become subject matter experts in the use of this detection equipment. Supporting the development of bespoke deployment plans for operational activity. Delivering the Duty Officer cadre for the NCBRNC. Where necessary further training will be given to achieve this. Successful applicants will be expected to travel to other locations within the UK in line with the capability requirements. Whilst the advertised role is to be predominantly based at one of the three locations, there is an expectation that the successful applicant will be able to work from any of the three locations according to operational requirements. Skills and competencies Essential Have prior experience of working within the CBRN sphere. This includes previous Military, Police and other CBRN knowledge but as a minimum you should be a Police CBRN Responder. To be fully operationally fit for deployment. Demonstrate technological skills and be comfortable with the use of specialist IT equipment and supporting software. Demonstrate a good level of understanding of the CT Network and CBRN infrastructure nationally and at a force/regional level. Hold a full UK driving licence and be able to drive police vehicles.
Desirable Be a current and competent CBRN Tactical Advisor or be prepared to study towards the qualification. Demonstration of strong operational competence within policing. Hold a current police Standard / Advanced driving grade or be prepared to work towards achieving these grades. Advanced in the use of MS Office products (Word, PowerPoint & Outlook). ⇄ This position is offered as a 2 year secondment to West Midlands Police. To qualify, you must confirm in your application that you have received approval, through the process established by your Chief Officer, for secondment.
Externally seconded officers will work under a Central Service Agreement. The agreement sets out the terms of the secondment and the financial and logistical benefits that this will have in relation to the role. Officers for this post will be based at either Cardiff or Northallerton where full hotel accommodation will be provided, including all meals and mileage allowance.
