We’re currently the second largest oncology out-licensor globally, and to date we’ve played an instrumental role in forming over 60 startup companies with $2.8 billion raised, and bringing 11 new cancer drugs to market, with 6 million doses administered to cancer patients all over the world.About the roleAs a Research Translation Executive you will work within the Search & Evaluation (S&E) team at Cancer Research Horizons. S&E is the front-line team of Cancer Research Horizons, working with researchers funded by Cancer Research UK to identify and develop research discoveries that can be translated into innovations that will impact the lives of cancer patients.The S&E team is distributed geographically to provide highly visible and frontline support to all CRUK-funded researchers. As such, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of plans for translation of CRUK funded research at specified key CRUK sites across your region. This will include working with oncology researchers to proactively identify projects and technologies with patient benefit potential, including setting the intellectual property strategy and driving project development by working with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.Success in this role means that you have excellent scientific judgement, aligned with good knowledge and awareness of oncology drug/technology discovery, IP protection and development and associated science. You will welcome an intellectual challenge and be able to quickly understand and provide critical analysis of proposed new projects and more complex ventures and define strategies for development of your projects. You will work closely with CRUK-funded researchers and associated technology transfer offices, meaning that excellent interpersonal, relationship and stakeholder management skills are crucial. You will interact with researchers working on a wide range of scientific and technological areas, including drug
discovery/development,
biomarkers, diagnostics, medical devices, digital health, and research reagents. Ideally, you will provide specialist knowledge of one of these areas on a Commercial Partnerships-wide basis. You will work with colleagues across Commercial Partnerships, and Research and Innovation more widely, to identify collaborative opportunities to translate research across the UK, leveraging CRUKs investment in diverse areas of oncology research to deliver maximum patient impact.What will I be doing?Develop a deep understanding of the cancer research landscape within the designated region/institution.Build and maintain strong, integrated relationships with senior oncology researchers and host technology transfer offices in the designated region/institution.Act as a highly visible primary point of contact for oncology researchers with Cancer Research Horizons.Through interactions with researchers, proactively seek invention disclosures for technologies with the potential to impact the lives of cancer patients.Review and critique invention disclosures, performing appropriate due diligence and
scientific/commercial
evaluation, seeking input from colleagues and experts, as appropriate.Propose new technology development opportunities to internal governance boards to seek approval for their development and onward commercialisation.Protect and manage project associated intellectual property.With Cancer Research Horizons Business Development colleagues, develop marketing materials for technologies, as appropriate.Routine contract negotiation and management in liaison with BD&T and Legal colleaguesProtect and manage project associated intellectual property.With Cancer Research Horizons Business Development colleagues, develop marketing materials for technologies, as appropriate.Contribute to the development and implementation of strategic initiatives across the region.What skills are you looking for?Key Technical Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours:PhD (or equivalent) in a scientific or healthcare discipline, ideally oncology/technology related.In-depth experience in translating discovery research and pre-clinical science gained in sectors such as medical technologies, diagnostics, healthcare technologies and
pharmaceuticals.
This experience may have been gained in industry, healthcare, academia or in non-profit organisations.Ideally, good working knowledge and experience of the patent filing and prosecution process.Experience of research-related contracts including MTAs, CDAsGrasping scientific and technical concepts quickly and, ideally, translating these into commercially viable proposals.Working effectively with key stakeholders, showing excellent influencing skills and, where appropriate, having tenacity and persistence.Deploying excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships.With colleagues, designing and implementing strategies for transferring technologies to industry.Work collaboratively within a cross-functional team to deliver the scientific, commercial, and operational objectives of the overall function.Knowledge and awareness of oncology drug/technology discovery, IP protection and development and associated science.Scientific judgement and project management skills, together with a talent for business acumen and operational delivery.Experience of developing and implementing strategic initiatives aimed at maximising collaboration and productivity.What will I gain?Every one of our employees contributes to our progress and is supporting our work to beat cancer.
