Research Scientist (postdoc, sediment transport dynamics)At GTK, we aim to work for the Earth and for Us. We conduct objective research to find solutions to challenges posed by climate change, the energy transition, and the circular economy. Our 400 experts are specialists in the mineral economy, green energy, water management, the environment, and digital solutions. Together with our Finnish and global partners, we are building sustainable and carbon-neutral future. GTK is a research organization governed by the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy. www.gtk.fi/en Research Scientist (postdoc, sediment transport dynamics)The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for a post-doctoral researcher for sediment transport dynamics studies for the Environmental Solutions unit. Your office will be in Espoo in the Helsinki capital area, and you can also work remotely flexibly in Finland. You will work in the PHYTOTRANS project funded by Research Council of Finland, with collaborating partners from the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). There is also strong international collaboration with e.g. National Oceanography Centre (UK), University of Gothenburg (SE) and University of Southern Denmark (DK).Your assignment will be carrying out research in the field of sediment transport dynamics in the northern Baltic Sea. You will be responsible for the operation of acoustic and optical instruments attached to a benthic lander, including high-resolution in-situ measurements of near-bottom water profiles of flow velocity and suspended particle concentration and size, as well as measuring changes in the elevation and migration of seafloor bedforms, such as ripples. You will develop methods and carry out advanced data analysis, integrating these measurements to advance our understanding of lateral sediment dynamics in the marine environment and enabling the direct quantification of sediment transport in the near-bottom water and on the seafloor. As a part of this project, you will carry out a ca. 1-month research visit to one of our international collaborators. You will disseminate findings in scientific conferences and peer-reviewed scientific articles. You will be working in the Marine Geology group of the Environmental Solutions unit of approximately 60 professionals. The Marine Geology group operates a marine geological research vessel Geomari, which is equipped with modern multibeam echosounding and sub-bottom profiling instruments, sediment corers and the benthic lander.Education, experience and skills expected of an applicantPhD in geophysics, civil or environmental engineering, physical oceanography, geosciences, or any related fieldSound programming skills (e.g. C/C++, Git, Python, R, Bash)Experience in measurements and modelling sediment transport dynamicsExperience in acoustic measurement technologiesKnowledge on processing and integration of instrument dataUnderstanding of physical oceanographyAbility and willingness to participate in research cruises on the Baltic SeaEnglish language proficiency, both oral and writtenDemonstrated ability to write scientific publicationsEducation, experience and skills that are appreciatedExperience in optical measurement technologiesKnowledge on sedimentology and sedimentary (bio)geochemistryStrong international networks and networking skillsExperience in international work settingsInterest in learning Finnish languagePersonal qualities desired from the applicantYou are an adaptable team player and self-initiated and independent in your work.
