Role:                     Purchasing Manager (Working within a Manufacturing Business)

Salary:                 £50,000 - £80,000 + Car/Car allowance + excellent benefits

Company:           Global manufacturing business which supplies market leading technical components into business-critical sectors.

Location:             Northwich, Knutsford, Wilmslow & Warrington area

This is a fantastic opportunity with a busy manufacturing company based in the northwest (and with sites across the world) that is seeking an experienced Purchasing Manager to join the business. Due to their continued growth and success, this role has become available with the focus on developing a more cost effective supply chain across the China region to help improve their market stance.

Reporting to the Head of Purchasing, you’ll be fully accountable for the supply of materials and components to meet requirements for a specific customer base. This includes meeting cost, delivery, quality and service needs. The Purchasing Manager will be empowered to make necessary decisions regarding demand, supply, pricing and supplier selection for a specific product range they are looking to develop.

You will also be responsible for:


  • Responsibility for expansion of supply chain into new international markets, particularly China.
  • Strong focus upon cost reduction and reducing the total cost of raw material and finished components.
  • Responsible for developing and executing effective supply chain strategies.
  • Mitigation of supply chain risks.
  • Ensuring supply base delivers on time to high-quality standards.
  • Minimising and lowering the total cost of acquisition of finished parts and raw materials.
  • Ensuring the defined quality / specification standards are met or exceeded.
  • Balancing and optimising supply and demand.
  • Fulfilling internal and external customer requirements in terms of availability and quality.
  • Updating inventory strategies where needed to increase sales, maximise cash flow and manage stock quantities.
  • Evaluating, selecting, and recommending new vendors.
  • Ensuring supply chain resilience.
  • Negotiating favourable prices and terms to maximize cash flow.
  • Building and maintaining good relationships with key suppliers and all supply chain stakeholders.
  • Studying market trends and identifying any risks when sourcing key commodities.
  • Mitigating vendor and market risks.
  • Resolving vendor disputes and any commodity-related issues.
  • Analysing and minimising the total cost of acquisition on procured parts and materials

Skills required:


  • Engineering, Technical Background essential. Machine shop experience very desirable.
  • Good negotiation skills, ability to work and communicate with vendors and stakeholders.
  • Business acumen and excellent knowledge of commodity markets.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills.
  • Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge of metals and their technical standards / specifications.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work well with peers and other functions.
  • Financial literacy – Cost of materials, acquisition cost and total cost philosophies

Experience required:


  • HNC or Degree in a technical subject or relevant experience in a technical/ manufacturing environment.
  • Experience of developing and managing a sophisticated global subcontract base.
  • Experience of working with an integrated ERP system such as Oracle or SAP.
  • At least four years' experience in supply chain or commodity management.
  • CIPS qualification preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of financial markets that influence commodity prices.
