GlasgowWe have a really exciting opportunity in our Glasgow Office. JWH Ross
is part of the Fairhurst Group and are specialists in assessment and engineering associated with historic mining legacy constraints. Within the wider Glasgow “Geo Team” of around 30 staff, we are looking to recruit a Team Principal to take a lead role in driving the JWH Ross
business forward. The successful candidate will hold a key and permanent position in the team, supported by the wider geo-environmental team leaders.This role offers an exciting opportunity for career progression in a dynamic multi-disciplinary office with a large variety of work streams.RESPONSIBILITIESA practical and dedicated Engineer/Geologist is required to manage an established business stream and workload as well as developing new business. This is a specialist role and candidates should be well versed in the legacy mining issues that are found across the Scottish Coal fields and beyond. The successful candidate should have robust technical abilities, with a strong sense of customer service and project management experience. The candidate should have a comprehensive ability to lead technical project teams and collaborate with wider design teams and clients.The candidate should also have strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish, maintain and enhance client relationships and secure new and repeat business.The candidate would preferably have experience in a range of sectors, including industrial, commercial and residential/leisure developments, infrastructure and rail, providing robust, technically sound and cost-effective solutions. The JWHRoss /Fairhurst client basis is wide-ranging, including land owners/land agents, developers and development managers, contractors, local government, architects, Transport Scotland and Network Rail.The successful candidate would be expected to have the following abilities and performance expectations:Experience to prepare and lead others in undertaking, scoping and reviewing Coal Mining Risk AssessmentsAbility to understand historic mine plans, bores and mine surveysSound understanding of the assessment of surface subsidence from historic coal miningAbility to develop geological structural models from borehole records, geological mapping and mine plan information.Ability to prepare and lead others in the preparation of ground investigations for legacy mining issues, with a sound understanding of currently available investigation, sampling and geophysical techniques;A sound understanding of the current legislation and planning regime, associated with the presence of historic mining legacy issues.Ability to prepare and lead others in the preparation of Interpretative Coal Mining Risk Reports including a comprehensive understanding of ground models, impacts, risk assessment and mitigation measures, geotechnical engineering properties and soil behaviours;A thorough understanding in the assessment and detailed design of mining legacy mitigationExperience and ability to prepare designs, specifications and contractual documents for the development of mining legacy mitigation schemes.Experience of site based monitoring of mining legacy mitigation worksExperience in considering buildability, construction techniques and constraints and value engineering appraisalsAbility to deliver projects and work within a multi-disciplinary consultancy, with awareness of structural, civil and transport capabilities in the wider firm and ability to work collaboratively with other disciplinesAbility to provide technically sound and commercially focussed proposals and bids, based on a clear understanding of clients’ requirementsExperience in client-facing roles, developing good working relationships with other professionals within wider project teamsAbility to develop and maintain new client relationshipsPromoting Health and Safety knowledge and understandingManagement of project finances including invoicing, preparation and working to budgets, sub-contractor contracts etc.QUALIFICATIONSA good degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, Mining Engineering or Civil Engineering is required. An MSc in Geotechnics or Engineering Geology or a related subject would be beneficial but is not essential. Candidates are expected to have at least 12 years of experience and be chartered/near chartered.
