About us
With over 4,000 staff members and around 40,000 students – including some 6,000 choosing to study for a postgraduate qualification – we are a big institution with even bigger ambitions. We are proud to be an integral part of the great city of Manchester, but our impact reaches around the globe. Currently, we offer more than 250 postgraduate taught programmes and have 14 centres of research expertise.
We are committed to providing excellent education to transform our students’ lives, and to delivering high quality research with powerful real-world impacts and benefits, as evidenced by our highly successful REF outcome: 30% of our research, across more than 740 academics, has been rated as world leading. And 91% of our research impact is world leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021).
Now, we are making a significant investment in realising our objectives to excel in education and to build on our research reputation. Alongside our £400m campus and University infrastructure upgrade, we are investing in people: making Manchester Metropolitan the logical next step for talented, ambitious senior research academics at their peak
About the opportunity
You will join an institution that researches many aspects of disease pathology and patient impact. Here, you have the support of local, national and international collaborators to deliver research and clinical education work to impact both local and wider regional health outcomes. You will play a leading role in our Centre for Bioscience in the Department of Life Sciences. We are home to a diverse and collegiate community of academics and professional services whose partnerships with NHS Foundation Trusts are delivering clinical interventions that address some of the most widespread diseases affecting the population. Areas of specialism include myocardial infarction; peripheral vascular disease; thrombosis; chronic kidney disease; stroke; and neurovascular contributions to dementia.
Following REF 2021, we rank 15th in the UK for the power of research in Allied Health. We’re also investing £115m in our campus, introducing a host of new scientific facilities such as extensive bioscience labs with three new cell culture suites, an imaging core with super-resolution confocal microscopes, and a flow cytometry core with cell sorting facilities. We are strategically expanding our portfolio, embedding large cohort gene and epigenomic association studies to support research into the pathological mechanisms involved in disease processes. Meanwhile, we are exploring developments in big data analysis of patient records and other cross-disciplinary initiatives.
You will have the freedom to tailor your development and build your academic reputation. Alongside expanding on your own vision and expertise, you will play a key role in mentoring others, promoting a cooperative, intellectually curious research culture and, as a member of the leadership community, supporting our long-term research strategy to enrich students’ lives while having a positive effect on our world. You can count on our full support; from the financial backing you need to the collegiate atmosphere and extraordinary quality of life that Manchester Metropolitan can offer.
