My client is currently seeking a Principal Systems Engineer to join a strong multi-disciplined R&D team in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.  This is an opportunity to join one of the leading companies in the UK - the R&D group focuses on developing highly complex scientific instrumentation and are responsible for developing new products from concept through to manufacture, as well as supporting manufacturing with ongoing product lines.

Key responsibilities of the Principal Systems Engineer job:


  • To collaborate with stakeholders to define system design and specification, covering concept development, design calculations or modelling for optical, mechanical, electronic or algorithmic aspects of the system depending on experience and project requirements
  • Manage design verification activities, including running design reviews, as well as design and execution of test plans for prototype evaluation
  • Investigation of selected manufacturing/field failures in order to determine root cause and initiate remedial actions
  • Understand the products' performance parameters both at the system and sub-system level
  • Work with and guide junior staff members in executing test plans and interpreting results
  • Actively participate in troubleshooting activities including root cause analysis both in the context of new product development and ongoing manufacturing issues

Key skills / experience needed for the Principal Systems Engineer job:


  • At least a bachelor's degree or higher in Physics, or a related subject
  • Extensive experience in the design, troubleshooting and manufacture of electro-mechanical equipment
  • Experience in technical leadership role
  • Experience of working within a structured development program
  • High level of engineering / physics / maths knowledge
  • Ability to use complex software
