Job Title: Chief Scientific/Product Development Officer - Formulation
Type: Fixed-term for 1.5 years (0.6FTE)
Salary: Highly attractive
Location: Birmingham/Hybrid
We are looking for an expert formulator to drive the formulation science and associated regulatory components of our product pipeline and provide mentoring and coaching to more junior formulation and scientific staff. We are looking for someone who has experience with product development having demonstrated experience of delivering products from conception to clinical phases, scale-up and regulatory approval. The ideal person should have strong inter-personal skills and ability to lead a growing team of scientists in a start-up dynamic environment.
The key responsibilities of the role are to:

  • Bring formulation and process expertise to design and guide the development for a range of simple and complex drug products to support clinical phases
  • Bring the right / specific scientific thinking together with pragmatic design thinking to fast-track the development of products
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of material properties and characterisation of physical attributes of dosage forms (including transdermal, injectable, and oral forms)
  • Provide expertise in drug delivery and material characterisation to contribute to the development activities for challenging compounds and delivery vehicles (e.g. poorly solubles, combination products, targeted or controlled-release systems)
  • Work closely with the analytical scientists to ensure appropriate testing of formulations is carried out
  • Work with modelling partners and academic collaborators to drive our product pipeline expansion plans to fruition
  • Understand and articulate global regulatory requirements for a CMC submission and design the product strategy accordingly
  • Act as pharmaceutical development project leader / manager for some partner projects and collaborative grants
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of formulation capability, including keeping abreast of state-of-the-art formulation techniques.
  • Provide direction, oversight and coaching of other members of staff

Essential Requirements:

  • Educated to PhD and 5-7+ years' experience in Pharmaceutical Formulation/Product Development in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Expertise in transdermal and/or parenteral formulation development and optimisation
  • Experience of progressing the formulation components of various drug projects through different development phases (discovery to launch) across global markets
  • Wide ranging experience of interactions with global regulatory authorities
  • Good understanding of ICH quality guidelines and global CMC regulatory requirements
  • Experience with drug-delivery systems such as modified-release formulations, nano-particulate systems and permeation of drug molecules via physiological barriers
  • Proven ability to coach and mentor others
  • Valid UK driving license
