Principal Engineer

Experienced Principal Engineer to be responsible for the delivery of an alternative fuel and diesel ICE, leading a team responsible for the delivery of multiple engine systems. Your responsibility will be to ensure a robust product meeting all regulatory, quality, cost and timing requirements. Previous experience of ICE design and development, and Team Management is essential.

Principal Engineer Role:



Working within a dynamic engineering-focused team, you will be accountable for the end-to-end engineering activities (research, development, delivery, and launch) relating to the delivery of a brand-new product. You will lead a team responsible for multiple engine systems, taking them from concept through to production. 



You will support and liaise with internal and external stakeholders, plan and control the systems project progress, manage the resource within your team, offer technical guidance and direction, provide mentorship and leadership, contribute to process development and the overall direction of the team. You will report directly into the Mechanical Systems Manager and your team will have global ownership of the mechanical systems for which they are responsible. 



Responsibilities:



Planning and Organisation



Create and maintain resource/project plans, providing clear and concise reports to management. 



Facilitate, coordinate and liaise with key stakeholders (e.g. programme, purchasing, supplier, quality, mechanical development) for seamless project delivery. 



Provide support to your team members during stakeholder meetings.



Support programme gateway reviews with technical evidence, risk evaluation and cost status.



Provide effective and timely escalation/status report through clear communication to management.



Provide support to other design workstreams throughout the global design team.



Drive and coordinate activity autonomously to ensure product delivery. 



Research and Development



Keep on track of the state-of-the-art technical development relating to the engine platform.



Understand the effectiveness and importance of relevant benchmarking.



Utilise your experience during development of new concepts and problem solving. 



Utilise the expertise of your team to execute the POC (Proof-of-Concept) assessment either through test campaign or/and first principle analysis and simulation.



Design and Release



Review, critique and advise on system designs, DFMEA’s, DVP’s. Promote robust detailed design documentation. 



First level signoff responsibility for all intra-team mechanical systems designs, drawings and reports. 



Provide technical leadership and direction throughout the wider Mechanical Systems Team, primarily focusing on delivery of the systems your team are responsible for.   



Work in a simultaneous engineering environment to support product development, ensuring design for manufacture, assembly and service; Achieving quality by design.



Agree project requirements based on cascaded performance, durability, quality and cost targets.



Review and approve system and component specifications and designs based on agreed requirements with key stakeholders.



Provide support in the resolution of engineering issues using structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g. Global 8D, DMAIC).



Support achievement of business’s quality and warranty targets.



Support current product through continuous improvement of components and system specification. 



Team Development



Provide leadership and clear direction to your team, in support of the wider mechanical systems team.  



Take an active role in the development of your team.



Support the Mechanical Systems Team Manager in the development of the wider systems team, its performance, processes, and budgeting.



Undertake performance appraisals and provide guidance and mentorship to promote high performance within your team.



Principal Engineer Requirements:




  • Have a degree in an associated mechanical engineering discipline, with a sound understanding of Mechanical Engineering principles (showing an attention to detail, and being data driven).

  • Clear experience of team leadership. 

  • Extensive experience of the full ICE product mechanical design and development from concept to delivery to customer. 

  • Clear understanding of ICE operating principles (e.g. mechanical/electromechanical design, thermodynamics, and tribology). 

  • A practical understanding or experience of ICE’s and the integration into machines is beneficial. 

  • Demonstratable experience in use of commercially available data management systems such as Siemens TeamCenter. 

  • Sound understanding of analysis techniques and their use in analysis lead design (e.g. 1D, FEA, Fatigue Analysis, CFD). 

  • Sound knowledge of mechanical engineering GD&T and manufacturing processes.

  • Demonstrate proven mechanical design project management skills. 

  • Have a sound grasp of the engine product development cycle, and expertise in engine system and component specification, design, development and sign-off (using relevant tools).

  • Experienced in supplier interactions and management, with good commercial awareness and conflict resolution. 

  • Experience in team management and development.

  • Understand and contribute to the management of the project(s). 

  • Be able to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly and concisely at all levels.

  • Show flexibility - the role requires some travel to company, customer and supplier sites.

  • Be willing to contribute in a dynamic, collaborative, and cross-discipline team setting.
