About The Pirbright Institute
The Pirbright Institute delivers world-leading research to understand, predict, detect and respond to viral disease outbreaks. We study viruses of livestock that are endemic and exotic to the UK, including zoonotic viruses, by using the most advanced tools and technologies to understand host-pathogen interactions in animals and arthropod vectors. Our major strength in understanding the immune systems of livestock provides a platform to control current diseases and respond to emerging threats.
Our Institute is made up of a dynamic and vibrant community of staff covering a diverse set of chosen fields, backgrounds and experience. We all play a crucial role in furthering the Institute’s aspirations, advancing the frontiers of science and knowledge through our excellent scientific research, knowledge sharing and contribution; with a real focus in improving the world in which we live. Our outlook is always balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviours and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one Institute’ approach.
Organisation position and purpose
The aim of the Immunogenetics Group is to improve livestock disease resistance by investigating the genetics underlying differential immune responses to vaccination and infection.
We are addressing the needs of the research community and bridging the requirements of the vaccine industry. We have developed tools and techniques to link immunogenetic variations with disease outcome, including germline-encoded molecules such as MHC and rearranging receptors such as antibodies.
We are now recruiting a postdoctoral scientist for a permanent role in our research group. This post will play a leading role using contemporary techniques and technologies (long read sequencing, single cell sequencing, spectral flow cytometry, antibody isotype-specific Fluorospot, high-throughput surface plasmon resonance) to understand the molecular basis of host responses to pathogen challenge. This role sits within a larger team that includes expertise in bioinformatics, recombinant antibody production, cellular biology and protein-protein interactions.
Main duties and responsibilities:
Designing, Performing, and Analysing Experiments (75%):
Lead strategically important research projects studying innate and adaptive immune responses to a range of economically important livestock pathogens (such as bluetongue virus, bovine respiratory syncytial virus, food-and-mouth disease virus).
Develop expertise in cutting-edge assays studying host-pathogen interaction at molecular detail.
Contribute specific expertise to a range ongoing projects and new opportunities.
Develop and optimize assays for the characterization and modification of antigen-specific antibodies.
Troubleshoot assay protocols to ensure robust and reproducible results.
Maintaining Accurate Records of Progress (10%):
Maintain meticulous records of experimental procedures, results, and observations in compliance with laboratory protocols and regulatory requirements.
Contribute to the preparation of research manuscripts by providing detailed documentation of experimental methodologies and outcomes.
Lab Management Duties (5%):
Participate in laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, inventory management, and adherence to safety protocols.
Train and supervise junior laboratory personnel, providing guidance on experimental techniques and procedures.
Presentation at Internal and External Meetings (5%):
Prepare and deliver presentations on research findings at both internal lab meetings and external scientific conferences.
Engage in discussions with colleagues and collaborators to disseminate research progress and solicit feedback.
Keep Up-to-Date with Techniques and Literature (5%):
Stay abreast of the latest developments in vaccine development, antibody engineering, and related methodologies through literature review and attendance at scientific seminars and conferences.
Incorporate new techniques and approaches into research methodologies to enhance project outcomes.
Due to the nature of the work we do, all successful applicants will be required to go through a comprehensive screening process including reference and qualification checks, financial and security clearances.
Essential/Desirable requirements

A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant branch of biosciences.
A publication record commensurate with career stage.
Significant and relevant experience in a recognised R&D environment.
Strong hands-on laboratory experience in cellular and/or molecular biology.
A track record of independence in designing assays, performing experiments, and analysing data.
Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with team members and other scientists.
Desirable
Experience in flow cytometry.
A broad understanding of variable immune-related genes.
Experience in next-generation sequencing, encompassing library preparation and quality control procedures.
Familiarity in protein-protein interaction analysis techniques such as Bio-Layer Interferometry (BLI) or Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR).
Familiarity with the 10X Genomics platform for high-throughput genomic analysis or with flow cytometry phenotyping lymphocyte subsets.
Bioinformatic skills.
