The opportunity: We are a lean and actively engaged in-house legal and compliance department, supporting Markel’s global insurance engine. The team supports a wide range of corporate and business activities, lending variety and challenge to our working lives. We focus on the high risk and high value areas where we can add most strategic benefit, helping our clients navigate challenges and enable opportunities.This role will focus on operational innovation projects, supporting the Innovation Manager on initiatives across the global Legal & Compliance function. You’ll be essential to our efforts to improve our processes, streamline our operations and embrace technology, helping to save great people from repetitive manual tasks and making a lasting difference to our department! You’ll also be crucial to telling our story and demonstrating our value to stakeholders across Markel.What you’ll be doing:Support the global Insurance Legal & Compliance (‘ILC’) department’s Innovation Manager on a range of transformation initiatives.Using project management skills and techniques, facilitate the ILC team’s projects to improve processes and adopt technologies which will improve the quality of service delivery, reduce cost and increase efficiency and resilience.Support the insurance General Counsel in developing reporting for an executive audience.Help team members achieve success in innovation projects. Keep them on time, on task and on budget. Lead working group meetings. Follow up on actions. Track milestones, dependencies and resources. Keep documentation up to date.Keep key stakeholders updated on project progress, timelines, costs and risks.Work with external vendors and developers, monitor fees and timelines, balance the cost benefit of working with internal vs external partners.Promote best practices in project management, information management and technology use across ILC. Educate colleagues on these.Promote the sharing of ideas and solutions across ILC teams and Markel more widely.Our must-haves:Have demonstrable experience in project management, with a good understanding of techniques and best practices. Confident user of project management tools and applications.Have experience facilitating transformation, operational change or technology adoption projects.Have very strong organisation and time management skills – manage a mixed portfolio of work, pivoting according to changing priorities and managing stakeholder expectations accordingly.Be able to support colleagues to deliver projects – taking steps to make delivery easy. Determined, creative and pragmatic in the face of obstacles.Be a confident, clear and concise communicator. Able to engage with key stakeholders at all levels through various mediums.Be a logical thinker – able to turn unstructured conversations into an actionable structured process. Good attention to detail.Pick up new concepts quickly, learn efficiently and be willing to take on additional responsibility.Be able to design and present engaging content, demonstrating the value of our work to executive audiences and linking it to Markel’s broader objectives.Be flexible, pragmatic and ready to solve problems. Someone intent on excellence, but able to recognise when done is better than perfect. A collaborative team player.Experience working in or with legal or compliance functions would be a plusInterest / experience in 'citizen development' – i.e. using no-code / low-code solutions to automate repetitive manual processes.Familiarity with Microsoft’s Power Platform e.g. Power Automate, Power BI.Experience of storytelling with data for a corporate audience.
