Summary
An individual who is passionate and enthusiastic about nature and can bring nature / sustainability / climate risk expertise and experience in the context of banking to lead the development of our nature-risk capabilities and further integration of nature-risk considerations into our decision-making, as well as ensuring we meet the emerging regulatory demands of nature-risk disclosures.
Having catalyzed and incubated the nature risk workstream within the chief Sustainability Office Nature Innovation Hub, supported by an informal working group with 1 Line of Defence (LoD) and 2LoD representation, this workstream will now be transitioned over and integrated into the Environmental and Social Risk Management (ESRM) team.
This opportunity is within Standard Chartered’s ESRM team, which is part of our Strategic Initiatives team, and with a reporting line into the Global Head of ESRM and Climate Risk Analysts. This role will provide a unique opportunity to further enhance and expand Standard Chartered’s nature-risk capability and will provide unique visibility across the firm, and offer exposure to different parts of the firm, functions, and products.
Responsibilities
Provide strategic oversight of nature-risk across the bank.
Leading the formal nature-risk working group, the individual will be accountable for the delivery of nature risk assessments on how we identify, assess, manage, monitor, and transparently disclose nature-related impacts, dependencies and risks associated with the Group’s client activities along with our supply chains and operations.
Develop materials, tools and methodologies to support our nature-risk proposition for use in engagements, events, and broader thought leadership.
Develop and support the implementation and integration of nature risk management into existing risk frameworks, governance, processes, and policies, leveraging and adapting existing climate risk frameworks as appropriate.
Work closely with 2LoD (ESG Reputation Risk, Climate Risk, CFCC, compliance, legal etc) to ensure seamless integration and connectivity between 1LoD and 2LoD.
Drive the development, quantification, and translation of nature risk into financial risk.
Critical to the role will be preparing the Bank to respond to, and report on, nature-related risks issues, aligned with the relevant regulatory and voluntary nature-related commitment (i.e. CSRD, TNFD etc).
Ensure effective management of the risks and financials of related nature-risk models and related commitments including reporting.
Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge of nature-risk regulations and an awareness of broader banking regulations, market trends, competitor activity and products/services.
Drive engagement and buy-in from across business and functions (i.e. CSO, CCIBMT and CCIB sector heads) on the approach of nature risk at the portfolio and sector level.As such, this individual will need to be detail-, have excellent stakeholder management skills and be proficient with communicating complex and technical concepts and analysis in a simple manner to senior stakeholders.
Build and upskill the bank on nature risks – frameworks, implications to SCB & clients etc.
Responsible for coordinating with stakeholders in other risk functions / CCIB businesses to ensure further integration of nature-risk is effective and new processes are covered appropriately.

Strong knowledge of nature concepts, principles, methods and tools, including valuation, accounting and reporting.

Basic understanding of the risks faced by financial services due to climate change and how it may impact a Bank’s loan portfolio is advantageous

QUALIFICATIONS*
Passionate about Nature!
Academic degree in Science, Sustainability, Engineering or related subject that is specific to environment, climate risk or nature
Working experience with knowledge of environmental and/or climate risk, and
Understanding of sustainable finance and ESG related initiatives is advantageous.
Knowledge and experience of sustainability and nature reporting and disclosures landscape with an understanding of frameworks and standards.
Knowledge of emerging regulations related to nature and the requirements on assessment, monitoring and disclosing.
Knowledge of tools, techniques, and strategies to quantify, qualify, and manage nature-related risk.
Demonstrates good understanding of a wide range of elements of the Bank’s business and the customers, industries, and partners with which the Bank is involved; and ability to learn.
An individual who is willing to roll up their sleeves and navigate in a complex topic in a new emerging topic. Thrives in working with ambiguity yet able to envision and strategize nature-risk.

Knowledge of the concepts, methodologies and methods of research analysis and the ability to locate, interpret and evaluate research findings compiled and documented by others and use this material to support empirical research.
