Overview
Everest People Solutions have joined forces with a leading cake manufacturer in the UK to recruit a versatile shift maintenance engineer with an electrical bias. The position operates on a six-week rotating schedule with two five-day breaks. The primary duty of the Shift Engineer is to ensure the seamless operation of the factory by promptly addressing breakdowns and conducting maintenance tasks. Additionally, they play a pivotal role in enhancing site operations through the implementation of improvements in machinery, hygiene standards, product quality, and overall performance. As Maintenance Engineer, you will also be accountable for both reactive and proactive maintenance endeavours, ensuring that all work meets the highest standards across the entirety of the site.
Key Duties & Responsibilities for the Maintenance Engineer
Responsible for conducting all maintenance activities throughout the factory premises.
Promptly address on-site breakdowns to minimise equipment downtime, ensuring a swift response at all times.
Perform repairs on plant equipment during production, either independently or as part of a team, with effectiveness and efficiency as the primary goals.
Execute planned preventive maintenance (PPM) activities on-site, maintaining a proactive approach and achieving high PPM output.
Achieve plant uptime and maintenance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) through a combination of planned, preventative, and predictive maintenance strategies.
Implement machinery and site improvement initiatives to enhance overall performance.
Efficiently manage engineering time to minimise downtime.
Improve OEE.
Ensure tools and equipment are maintained in a safe working condition, while also maintaining the cleanliness and safety of workshop and plant areas.
Adhere strictly to technical procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
Work in a tidy and organized manner, following the Companys Hygiene Code of Practice.
Uphold Health and Safety standards, ensuring all equipment meets Company and legal requirements.
Maintain a daily log of engineering reports.
Aid in organizing and controlling stock in the stores.
Complete work orders within designated timelines.
Coordinate effectively with external contractors.
Proficiently operate the effluent treatment plant as needed.
Demonstrate a willingness to acquire new skills and train others as necessary.
Represent the Engineering department in production meetings, fostering effective communication within the team.
Establish and maintain effective reporting and communication channels between Production, Engineering team, and Engineering Manager.
Comply with and support the implementation of company policies regarding food safety, quality, and legality in relation to the role.
Requirements for the Maintenance Engineer
Minimum 3 years of engineering experience.
Multi-skilled with NVQ Level 3 or higher in electrical or mechanical engineering.
Nationally recognised apprenticeship in engineering and 17th or 18th Edition Certification.
Proactive approach to fault finding and commitment to continuous improvement.
Ability to work independently with knowledge, discipline, and initiative.
Practical and team-oriented attitude towards engineering challenges.
Works well under pressure and meets tight deadlines.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient in MS Office and PPM systems, with understanding of electrical and mechanical drawings.
Flexible and logical approach to work, demonstrating a sense of urgency for continuous improvement.
Strong decision-making skills.
Essential experience in the food industry, preferably in a bakery environment.
Exposure to metal detectors, mixers, depositors, and flow wrappers advantageous.
Extensive breakdown analysis experience.
Health and Safety/Basic Food Hygiene training.
Experience in managing on-site contractors.
Flexible with start/finish times to align with production requirements.
Willingness to work extra hours in busy periods to meet business and customer needs.
Comfortable working in varying temperatures.
Physically fit for manual handling, working at height, and standing for long periods.
Availability for 12-hour shift patterns, including days, nights, and weekends.
Occasional business travel may be required.
