Job description
Job responsibilities
Women's CSU
LOCUM CONSULTANT OBSTETRICIAN
This post is a locum post for a period of 6 months with an option to increase to 12 months.
BACKGROUND
This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Obstetrician.
This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Obstetric team across Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital.
This post has arisen as part of the restructuring of the staffing within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Women's Clinical Service Unit (CSU) and the beginning of longer term staffing and planning for Building the Leeds Way, the opening of a new hospital incorporating Obstetrics, within the next five years. The post has also, in part, been created to cover long term absence in obstetrics.
Obstetric Departments
Women's Clinical Service Unit (CSU) in Leeds provides comprehensive secondary care for the local population and enjoys a position as a regional centre for all subspecialties. There are 24 obstetric Consultants within the Women's Clinical Service Unit.
The St James's Maternity Unit, which is located in Gledhow Wing, deals with approximately 4,500 deliveries per year. The Leeds General Infirmary Maternity Unit, located within Clarendon Wing, has around 4,500 deliveries per annum. Each Unit has a General Antenatal Outpatient Department, an Antenatal Day Unit, Maternity Assessment Unit, Fetal Assessment Unit and Obstetric Ultrasound Department. Fetal Medicine, including surgical and cardiac NNU services are based at LGI.
Antenatal Outpatients
As a Maternal Medicine Centre, in addition to high risk antenatal clinics, we run specialist clinics in conjunction with the relevant Physicians on either the St James's or LGI site. These include a Cardiac Clinic, Renal Clinic, Diabetic Clinic, Obstetric Haematology Clinic, a Rheumatology clinic and Endocrine Clinic (thyroid, adrenal and pituitary). We also run Substance Abuse, Teenage Pregnancy, Preterm Labour and Multiples clinic.
The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit is located at St James's and, although it comes under the auspices of Gynaecology, there are naturally close links between the Obstetric Departments and EPAU. A recurrent miscarriage clinic is run from the EPAU providing both a diagnostic service and support in early pregnancy.
Fetal Medicine
The Fetal Medicine Unit runs clinics five days a week at LGI offering invasive prenatal diagnosis, diagnosis and management of congenital anomalies, rhesus disease including in-utero transfusion.
The Building the Leeds Way project is an exciting development that involves, amongst other projects, the construction of a major new hospital at the Leeds General Infirmary site. On completion, the maternity services from both current sites will merge to this new hospital, creating one of the largest and newest maternity units in the country.
