We are seeking an enthusiastic Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join the existing team. The post is for 12 months fixed-term, renewable for six months up to a maximum of two years from appointment. Contract renewal is not automatic and is based on strong evidence of progression towards CESR/CCT in EM routes.
It is an exciting time to join our team as the new ED has opened the £8M redevelopment plan has delivered a bigger footprint and new Paediatric, Major and CDU areas. There is considerable scope for the successful candidates to be involved in service re-design and quality improvement projects, shaping the Departments future development and improvement of patient care.
Whilst the post has a strong emphasis on direct, consultant delivered emergency care, we are seeking applicants who will have the ability to make a major contribution to training and upskilling our junior medical staff, nursing staff and the wider professional team, to get involved and lead on QIP.
The department's many attributes include regional accreditation as a Trauma Unit, established as regional point of care ultrasound (POCUS) training centre with daily teaching run by accredited trainers. We also boast multi professional simulation sessions, dedicated teaching, and a unique CESR programme.
Main duties of the job
Reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and initial treatment of all emergencies as appropriate.
Referral of patients to other specialties, transfer of patients for admission to assessment units, to other hospitals within or outside the Trust, referral as outpatients or back to the community.
Provide high quality consultant delivered care to patients including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients.
Be proactive in ensuring that patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring that Quality Indicators and System Metrics to deliver safe quality and performance are delivered and sustained.
Work in conjunction with the nurse in charge and medical and surgical colleagues to ensure that there is effective and timely communication between the clinical team timely intervention and safe care to maintain optimal patient flow.

Job description
Job responsibilities
This post attracts 10 programmed activities per week. There may be the opportunity to increase this by negotiation and any special interests will be considered.
The job plan for the first three months will be based on a provisional/indicative timetable. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Director within three months of the commencement date of the appointee.
The supporting professional activities (SPAs) allocation within the provisional job plan is an illustrative guide only and will be finalised following individual agreement with successful candidates.
Initially 2.5 SPAs will be provided as standard for a full-time contract and reviewed at the first job plan within three months.
Regular job planning meetings will be undertaken with the post holder to ensure that the appointee is remunerated for any additional activities undertaken and that the job plan accurately reflects the overall workload undertaken by the post holder.

Full registration with the General Medical Council
FRCEM or GMC recognised equivalent examination
Provider status in ATLS/APLS/ALS or equivalent
Experience

Demonstrable experience of emergency medicine for at least 5 years
ITU and anaesthetic competencies signed off
