Legal Secretary – Criminal Law| Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester | Full Time| £23,000-£25,000

Kemps Solicitors are Criminal Defence Lawyers based in Greater Manchester with 3 branch offices servicing all Police Stations and Courts. We always aim to provide first class advice and representation, defending our clients' best interests.

We are contracted with the Legal Aid Agency to provide Criminal Defence services in the Police Station, Magistrates’ Court and the Crown Court.

The main purpose of this role is to provide secretarial and clerical support to fee earners in the Practice, and to provide an effective and welcoming reception service within the Firm.

You will be based at our Ashton Under Lyne Office.

Role Requirements


  • Experience as a legal secretary.
  • Experience GDPR checks.
  • Experience computer and IT staff support.
  • Confidentiality requirements.
  • Firms’ switchboard, telephone system.
  • Knowledge of GDPR & reporting requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Organisational skills.
  • Word processing and audio typing.
  • Literate and numerate.
  • Computer hardware and software and case management. (Supported by 3rd parties.)

Role Responsibilities


  • Ensuring file management is in accordance with Quality Procedures Manual, LAA Contract, and SQM requirements.
  • Greeting clients on arrival and directing them to the appropriate fee earner.
  • Some Reception and switchboard duties.
  • Liaising with clients in person and by telephone in a professional and friendly manner in keeping with the firm’s standards for client care.
  • Liaising with others by telephone.
  • Arranging mail despatch by post, hand or Document Exchange.
  • Arrange custody visits.
  • Maintaining the undertakings register.
  • Maintain GDPR. Work with the COLP on this and breach reporting.
  • Preparation of correspondence and documents through audio typing and word processing.
  • Maintaining up to date time records as appropriate.
  • Maintaining diaries and making appointments when required.
  • Photocopying as required.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of all the firm’s and clients’ documentation and information.
  • Consumables ordering.
  • Equipment and IT updates and servicing.
  • Daily filing including file opening, closing, storage and retrieval of client files.
  • Contributing to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Contributing to maintaining and improving office procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with Equality and Diversity Policy.
  • 1st aider or agreeable to training.
  • Any other duties which from time to time are required by the firm.
