Health and Safety Officer (Laboratory)



Location: Cambridge



Contract: Full-time and permanent



Sector: Biotechnology



Salary: c�30,000 - �40,000 depending on experience.





Our client is an innovative biotechnology company based outside of the centre of Cambridge. They have built a platform to synthesis DNA which provides exciting possibilities for ensuring cheaper, faster and more accurate DNA / gene constructs than traditional plasmid-based methods. In a key phase of their growth, our client is looking to hire a QA Manager to oversee a small team to achieve cGMP compliance and develop + maintain their QMS (Quality Management System). If you are an experienced Scientist with strong understanding of GMO health and safety regulations, or a H&S specialist with GMO experience, this may be an opportunity of interest.





The Opportunity



This is an opportunity for Health� and Safety professionals who have experience of GMO (genetically modified organism) regulations, within a biological or pharmaceutical setting. This role will involve working within an established company, ensuring that various branches of H&S are adhered to. You will be responsible for:




  • Ensuring compliance with GMO regulations in the workplace (GMO Contained Use Regulations 2014).

  • Ensuring compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Acts (1974 / 1999)

  • Act as main point of contact for external bodies including HSE.

  • Completing all health and safety documentation.

  • Conducting risk assessments for laboratory, fire safety and GMO.

  • Train staff members on health and safety processes.





Skills and Experience Needed



The ideal candidate will have the following:




  • Experience working in laboratory environments (essential, a scientific BSc or MSc / PhD would be a bonus)

  • Must have a sound understanding of GMO health and safety regulations (essential)

  • Knowledge of SAPO, ACDP classifications and COSHH (essential)

  • General workplace health and safety knowledge i.e. H&S at Work Acts (1974 / 1999) (essential)

  • Experience working across multiple sites (beneficial)

  • Experience of H&S within Grade A/B/C cleanrooms (beneficial)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (essential)

  • Right to work in the UK (essential)

  • Driving licence and access to a car to travel between sites (approx. 5 miles apart) (beneficial)
