The White Pine County Justice of the Peace is seeking applicants for the position of Justice Court Clerk.PurposeUnder general supervision, provides responsible and specialized court room and administrative support to the Judge of the Justice Court. Court Clerk is a specialized clerical class. Court Clerk class is distinguished from classes in the Department Assistant series in that the Court Clerks are sworn employees of the court assigned to perform secretarial and specialist clerical work in support of a Justice Court Judge. Minimum QualificationsHigh School diploma or equivalent and at least two (2) years of responsible general office experience with at least one (1) year in a legal setting. Any combination of training, education, and work experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of:Legal office practices and procedures, court services, and regulationsOffice practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipmentRecord keeping principles and practicesLegal terminologyCorrect English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuationBusiness arithmetic.Ability to:Understand and apply specific rules, codes, regulations, and proceduresPerform detailed office support workOrganize and maintain accurate files and recordsProvide factual information both in person and on the telephoneCommunicate and maintain working relationships with court personnel and with those having business with the courtOperate standard office equipment; accurately type at a rate sufficient to perform assigned duties.Essential Job FunctionsAssists public and other departments or agencies in person and by phone by answering inquiries regarding court procedures, sources of information, and sources of assistance; explains purpose and method of completion of forms and documents.Schedules hearings for arraignments, preliminary hearings, trials, small claims, and other hearings; notifies defendants and witnesses of court appearance dates; arranges for bailiff services; schedules court reporter for preliminary hearings; prepares documents for use by the judge during court session.Gathers information from documents and contacts with other offices and agencies; maintains records and prepares periodic or special reports; prepares notices and legal documents for court such as orders, warrants, affidavits, and judgments.Operates tape recording equipment and takes notes during court sessions; ensures completion of necessary paperwork on bails and bonds.Maintains and processes a variety of records and proceedings; processes traffic citations including fines, warning letters, bench warrants, and failure to appear notices; processes misdemeanor citations.Receives and keeps records of payments to the court; arranges payment schedules as directed by the court; distributes fees received; reconciles cash with records and makes deposits of money received; processes accounts payable for payment; keeps records of expenditures made; reconciles all banking transactions.Performs secretarial tasks for the judge; maintains files and daily work schedules; compiles and assembles information from files.Calculates and maintains monthly statistics and makes reports to the appropriate agencies; completes monthly financial reports for distribution to County offices.Performs other duties as assigned.Qualifications:Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use a keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods. The ability to hear to follow court proceedings and take minutes. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper; occasional lifting of items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds, files, stacks of paper, reference, and other material. Moving from place to place within the office; some reaching for items above and below desk level.Working Conditions:Generally clean work environment with limited exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, odors, or noise; periodic contact with angry and upset individuals; frequent interruptions of planned work activities by telephone calls, office visitors, and response to unplanned events.Position Hours40 hours per week Pay Rate$19.28 to $22.98 per hour DOE (Grade 125, Step X – Step 3) (Non-Bargained Unit Position)White Pine County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
