HV Cable Design Engineer

A Snapshot of your day
In your role as HV Cable Design Engineer you will have responsibility for ensuring the quality and consistency of the teams output, in areas such as the control of drawings and technical documents, and when required, support the actual delivery of these outputs. You will need to lead the production of project work through a robust checking process as well as the continued development of drawing office standards.
Principal Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Experience in the production of designs, calculations, reports & drawings associated with the new or modified EHV projects from 11kV 400kV covering EHV cabling. This will cover the production of bonding line diagrams and material specification lists etc, and calculations in areas such as, cable rating, induced voltage, short circuit force, thermo-mechanical thrust and pulling tension.
Skills & Experience Experience associated with technical specifications from clients such as National Grid, SSE, Scottish Power, UKPN, WPD, ENWL, etc
Understanding of IEC & ENA standards
Proficient in software packages such as MathCAD, CYMCAP, COMSOL, etc
Background working in Design & HAZID (hazards in design) reviews
Degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering and member of IET
Expert in cable system engineer, ideally with HVAC and HVDC systems
Analytical and able to tackle sophisticated engineering problems
A willingness to engage with new challenges as well as an ability to work confidently on tasks for which they have prior experience.
Ability to demonstrate good written communication skills including report writing.
Excellent communication and people skills.
You will be in a client facing role and will be expected to liaise with clients and contractors both on-site and over the phone, we regularly bid for projects all around the UK and Overseas. A prospective candidate should be prepared to undertake short-term site visits to meet with clients and contractors.
The candidate shall have experience in the following areas, delivering project cable system design requirements, including but not limited to;
Current ratings (IEC60287)
Impressed voltage calculations
Emergency, Cyclic & Short-term overload ratings
Cable crossing ratings
Producing Bonding diagrams
Producing Material Schedules & Technical specifications
Thermo-mechanical design calculation
Design Specific quality documents such as DID,DRR,DDL etc.
