Housing Corporate Governance Senior Lawyer (Senior Associate or Legal Director) Delivering strategic governance and corporate structuring advice, you’ll be a member of our market-leading Governance Team acting primarily for not-for-profit and third-sector organisations.
Your role will entail advising our housing and third sector clients on their governance arrangements, compliance with regulation and corporate structs. The work will include major projects such as mergers, joint ventures and collaborations, corporate restructuring, corporate registrations and de-registrations, policy estates, governance reviews, constitutional changes, governance and/or regulatory failings and investigations. We also provide ad-hoc advice on regulatory matters both housing and third sector organisations, alongside training and development of Boards and Executives.
Our clients will see you as an essential member of their own teams and a trusted advisor supporting them to deliver their strategy and goals.
As well as providing high-quality legal and strategic advice to our clients, your duties and responsibilities will include:
Assisting our Partner Team in the management and development of the department
Being an ambassador for our firm’s values and ethos.
Maintaining the highest standards of honesty, confidentiality and integrity in all dealings with our clients, your colleagues and all people with whom you come into contact.
Actively achieve monthly, annual or other periodic targets for time recording, billing, WIP and level of aged debts using our finance systems effectively.
Complying with The Law Society’s Rules of Professional Conduct.
Ensuring you are keeping up to date with the law and best practice and satisfying the CPD requirements.
Demonstrating strong self-management skills as well as in leading, influencing and team working.
Co-ordinating and working alongside colleagues both within and outside your local team to meet the needs and priorities of clients and deliver an excellent standard of client care.
Working with colleagues and on your own to develop the business of the firm including the production of briefings, newsletters, blogs and training, and using social media consistently and well to raise your and out profiles effectively and positively.
Attending conferences and networking events, being involved in the presentation of webinars, podcasts, workshops, seminars and lectures both in house and for our clients and professional bodies and advisers.
Being involved in the life of the firm as a whole and being a positive influence on peers and colleagues.
Supporting and involving yourself in the development of colleagues including supervising less experienced staff to develop their legal knowledge & skills, financial hygiene, dexterity and confidence.
About the candidate
The clients you will work with are mostly drawn from the third sector, primarily the social housing sector. Detailed knowledge and experience of housing governance is preferable but not obligatory, although you will have strong experience in corporate governance and company law generally.
You will be interested in the world from our clients’ perspectives, and curious and engaged about their businesses.
Working typically with our clients’ Executive Officers and Leadership Teams, their Boards and Chairs on matters that are generally highly strategic and often confidential, you will be expected to demonstrate integrity and discretion at all times.
You will have a personable and professional demeanour in leading client relationships, able to build strong relationships quickly and effectively and show good communication skills.
It goes without saying you will have exemplary standards of written work and drafting skills with very strong attention to detail. You will also have experience of public speaking in front of clients and colleagues individually and in groups including delivering training and presenting advice verbally.
You will have good personal organisation and time management skills, demonstrable project- and client-management skills and the ability to build good relationships of trust and confidence with peers and with clients.
You will have good leadership skills which you will draw on to work successfully in and across teams and other departments including Funding, Property, Construction, Regulatory, Employment & Pensions and Commercial. You will be able to manage colleagues successfully to deliver work to you as required.
You will be expected to deliver projects in your own name (with support from colleagues as required), to supervise tasks carried out by, a nd potentially to take on responsibility for line managing,
less experienced colleagues.
