Interested in beginning a career in archaeology? Are you seeking to build on an existing foundation of archaeological knowledge and digital skills? An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Norfolk County Council’s Historic Environment Record Team.
One of the largest HERs in the country, the Norfolk HER provides a comprehensive record of all areas of known archaeological activity, sites, finds, cropmarks, earthworks, industrial remains, defensive structures, and historic buildings within the county. The team maintains strong links with community groups, academics, and professional archaeologists and supports and works closely alongside other Norfolk County Council Services including the Historic Environment Planning Team, the Find Identification and Recording Service, the Air Photo Interpretation Team, Natural Environment teams, the Norfolk Record Office, and the Norfolk Museums Service. The HER is also proud to maintain a large, unique paper and photographic archive which reflects a long history of successful, forward-thinking projects and services. This is an exciting time to join the HER team as we continue to develop and digitise our supporting archives and related digital service offerings.
The successful candidate will join a growing team to support public access to the HER’s digital and physical resources, with a particular focus on developing and providing access to the Norfolk Air Photo Library (NAPL). One of the largest local collections in the country, this resource consists of over 100,000 vertical and oblique images of Norfolk and is widely consulted for heritage, geology, environmental studies, and other land use purposes such as planning and conveyancing. The candidate will also support the HER Officers by undertaking a wide variety of data synthesis activities to enhance text and spatial data on the HER database, liaising with non-commercial users to provide advice and guidance on the use of the HER resources, and participating in data enhancement projects.
About you: Candidates will have a degree in archaeology or a related discipline and previous experience of working with database software. Good writing skills, quick and efficient data entry skills with excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work as part of a team are essential. Previous experience of Historic Environment Records, HBSMR database software, and the Portable Antiquities Scheme would be an advantage but not essential.
