Job description
Herd Manager – Ashby St. Ledgers, Warwickshire
Due to the continued expansion of our dairy farming business, we are looking for aHerd Managerat one of our units nearAshby St. Ledges & Kilsby.
Our Business
We are a successful multi-site, grazing-based dairy business with three units across Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. You will lead our largest team of 5 full-time staff responsible for 600 Freisan, cross-bred grazing cows over 414ha. With a 44/88 Herringbone parlour and well-developed infrastructure of tracks and grazing platform, this is a key role within our business. The herd is averaging 6200 litres with the milk supplied on a TSDG Arla Tesco contract and calving being completed in spring.
Each farm is run independently with close collaboration, building a powerful culture based on high animal welfare, excellent working conditions and consistent investment in our staff.
The Role
As a Herd Manager, you will be managing all day-to-day duties, reporting to the Farms Owner. AI & Foot trimming experience is preferred but not essential, other roles and responsibilities will include:
- Overall management of the herd and ensuring animal welfare is the top priority.
- Leading and managing the team effectively.
- Milking to a high standard as part of a team and ensuring the parlour is kept clean and safe to operate.
- Working closely with the farm owner to achieve agreed KPI’s, financial budgets and herd targets.
- Keeping basic records and compliance up to date using Uniform.
- Liaising with Vets, nutritionists and consultants for the farm.
- Overall grazing management & budgeting
- Taking full responsibility for dry cow management, calving cows and colostrum protocols.
- General stockperson work and machine maintenance
We are now operating on a 5-day working week while the cows are grazing, with every other weekend off. Moving to 6 on 2 off through calving. This offers our staff a long-lasting work life balance.
A full UK driving license and proof of UK right to work is required for this role.
You
- You will be able to clearly demonstrate experience and knowledge of grass-based dairy cow management and have managed a team of people to achieve high standards.
- Strong people management skills are just as important as your technical experience and skills.
- Most importantly you will share our passion for cows, always setting top quality standards and having a high attention to detail.

Location
The farms are located between the picturesque villages of Ashby St Ledgers, Kilsby and Welton with excellent primary schools, village amenities and public houses. We have good connections to the M1 to the north and the A45 to the south.
