The Microbiology Department are looking to appoint a dedicated Senior Biomedical Scientist within the Bacteriology Section of the Microbiology Department. The Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA) Microbiology Department is based at the Norfolk at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. Providing the sole Microbiology service for Norfolk, we provide diagnostic and clinical services across three busy hospital sites at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and James Paget Hospital, along with the Integrated care boards (ICBs). We deliver high-performing, ISO15189 accredited pathology services across Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Serology and molecular diagnostics. The successful candidate will:
Hold an IBMS-accredited Biological Sciences degree or equivalent qualification and have a current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Experience in a UK Microbiology laboratory is preferential. Have responsibility to manage a section/s of the bacteriology laboratory, ensuring that all designated tasks are completed. They will use professional judgment to support and advise requesting clinicians upon effective diagnosis and treatment to improve patient management. Ensuring that quality management systems are maintained and implemented to maintain UKAS 15189 accreditation. Participate in provision of out of hours on-call service (lone-working)
Main duties of the jobSenior Biomedical to manage and be in technical charge of a section of the Microbiology (Bacteriology) service. Required to check all aspects of the quality of teamwork, to detect problems and take appropriate remedial action where necessary. Manage daily staff rotas for work allocation and training for medical staff, clinical scientists and other Biomedical scientists (BMS's), new entrant staff, students and (Biomedical Support Workers) BSW's. Manage the laboratory information service for own speciality on a daily basis allowing service users/clients access to accurate and updated patient test results. Job descriptionJob responsibilities
To ensure efficient day to day operation of a section of the Microbiology service and associated support services, including maintenance of expensive stocks and high value equipment.
To manage the deployment of staff within the service. Supervise and give training to new, junior staff and students.
Act as a section lead with specialist knowledge, responsible for urgent, routine and specialised work including interpretation of test results. To ensure accurate and timely test reports are provided to users in line with Departmental and Trust policies.
Responsible for maintenance of technical standards, both internally and through external quality assurance schemes as required for UKAS Accreditation. Implement appropriate corrective action when audits reveal non-compliances.
Manage and maintain specialised databases in LIS (Lab Information System) and patient storage databases on a daily basis.
Responsible for input and authorisation of patient data and results to include other colleagues work.
Participate in clinical trials and evaluation of new equipment and consumable items in association with other members of medical and technical staff.
Educate and train all grades of staff as required within their specialised area
