In this role you will manage senior level relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure we meet all appropriate HSE standards and drive a safety culture within the organisation. You will play a key role in defining and delivering an effective HSE agenda within ArrowXL that is both appropriate for the operation and ensures we encourage and maintain a strong HSE framework.
As a leader, you will collaborate with your team to foster a culture of safety excellence across all sites. Together, you will spearhead compliance and performance initiatives to create a first-class safety environment for everyone. With a focus on sustainable solutions, you will work towards reducing accidents and incidents, ensuring the well-being of all team members.
Main Responsibilities
Role Specific: Develop and implement a sustainable HSE strategy and framework.Ownership and progression of AXL’s Health and Safety policies and procedures.Engage and coach key internal and external stakeholders to adopt effective HSE practices and to influence change across the organisation.Ensure ongoing smooth operations and effective acceptance of processes across the business through effective management & colleague engagement, communication, and involvement.Undertake audits, inspections and ensure the health, safety, environment policies and systems are implemented consistently across the business.Constantly assess opportunities for improvement and share best practice across the organisation.Assist in the preparation, review and approval of Companywide Health and Safety Plans to further enhance a safety culture.Provide guidance on all aspects of safety, health, welfare, and fire prevention matters. Assist sites and the HSE team with incident investigation including ownership of any serious incidents and business continuity plans.Where necessary, liaise with the Health and Safety Executive and other appropriate external bodies.Be instrumental in developing appropriate HSE colleague training at all levels in conjunction with the Talent Team.Work with the People Team to develop Health and wellbeing strategies including ownership & development of programmes such as First Aiders and Mental Health first aiders, Drug and Alcohol awareness and testing.As the Head of Health, Safety & Environment, you will collaborate with key solicitors to resolve Employer liability and PPI claims in a cost-effective manner. You will also implement strategies to minimize risk, reduce costs, and decrease the frequency of such claims. Direct management of the National Facilities Manager, their function and team. Coaching and development of site facilities improvement plans inline with environmental best practice.Overseeing the external security team ensuring the safety and security of all main sites.Responsible for liaison with key solicitors in the cost-effective resolution of Employer liability & PPI claims whilst implementing strategies to reduce occasions, risk, and cost.Delivery of appropriate external HSE & Industry accreditation & awards e.g. ROSPA Gold award.Provision of regular updates to the Executive Board. These updates will occur bi-annually, as well as on an ad-hoc basis, to keep the board informed of the latest developments and progress in the HSE agendaEnsuring ambitious standards of delivery against KPI’s and budgets with plans to improve year on year. People Management: Leadership and coaching of the two Regional HSE Managers, National Facilities Manager, and external security team.Coaches & communicates in an inclusive manager at all levels throughout the business driving adherence and improvement of the business HSE standards and procedures.Develops & coaches direct reports on a regular basis as required, adapting own style to help support and engage all members of the HSE Team, ensuring that plans are aligned to both functional and broader business objectives.Defines and manages day to day activities, being clear about priorities to guarantee that deadlines are met.Accountable for ensuring the quality of the work is at a ‘Professional’ level for both them and their HSE team membersRole model positive behaviour, which is in keeping with our values, recognising good / excellent performance whilst being clear and transparent about areas of underperformance concerning direct line reports and other departmental teams where applicable.Provide clear advice and direction on how to change and bring about HSE, process, and efficiency improvements where these need to be made.Pro-actively manage any poor conduct and / or behaviour and any conflict in keeping with AXL policy and procedures.Engage and build open and honest professional and positive relationships with team members, fellow colleagues, peers and in particularly cross functionally with stakeholders and Exec members. Experience: 5 years’ practical experience in a related, multi-site Health & Safety role – preferably gained in the logistic/distribution sector.At least 2 years’ experience in leading and managing successful teams.Experience in leading cultural change and building an excellent HSE culture. Essential Skills and Attributes:
Strong stakeholder management skills, able to navigate the corporate landscape, quickly establish credibility and build effective, collaborative, working relationships at all levels.Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and motivate at all levels.Displays a comprehensive knowledge of current legislation and best practice.Demonstrate plenty of flexibility in respect of working hours as the role will require willingness to undertake regular travel and overnight stays. Role Specific Requirements:
Recognised HSE qualification – NEBOSH diploma or equivalent.Ideally, an active member of IOSH.Achieved and environmental qualification (desirable) such as IEMA certification in Environmental ManagementHold a valid UK driving licence as travel will be required (and have less than 6 penalty points).
