The starting salary is £86,485, which includes allowances totalling £2,841.The salary is broken down as £83,644 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £92,192 Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.The UK’s largest police service needs your skillsAs Head of Engineering for Threat Mitigation Technologies department you will lead a team of scientists and engineers in the delivery of technical support to police operations. This is a rare opportunity to apply your expertise and experience in the unique world of policing.Reporting to the OCU Commander for Protective Security Operations you will work as part of the Senior Leadership Team for the Command to provide technical oversight of the complex programmes of work underway in the Threat Mitigation Technologies department. This will require effective management of all activities and resources to meet customer needs through deployment of technical solutions to policing problems and to identify development needs to meet future requirements. You will be the operational interface between the police end users and engineering staff, working closely with police officers/staff at all levels. You will represent the department within the MPS on relevant boards and also nationally/internationally at meetings, conferences and working groups.To join us, you must be a talented scientist or engineer with expertise in managing multiple specialist technical teams and overseeing complex projects of technical work for security related applications. Your technical knowledge will be based on a UK OfQual defined level 6 qualification in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline, plus at least 10 years engineering experience in a relevant field including 5 years in a responsible operational management position. You will have a broad knowledge of a range of counter-terrorist technologies, including the underlying scientific principles, limitations and context of operational use. Experience in two or more technologies from: personnel/baggage screening, venue search, substance detection/analysis, materials and mechanical design is required.A keen oversight of safety and risk will be necessary, due to the broad range of technologies in use and activities undertaken by the team. This includes experience of managing staff engaged in field operations, leading equipment evaluation trials and the ability to oversee and advise on the safe adaptation and modification of commercial and other equipment to meet the operational environment.Collaboration and joint working are also fundamental to the role. You will have a proven record of developing collaborations in order to burden share and fostering industrial and academic relationships which provide ‘added value’ to core work programmes. The role requires working with security sensitive and protectively marked information generated by both the MPS and other partner agencies.
