Strategically important leadership role, driving improvement in Pulsant’s data centre operations
Choice of location (Edinburgh, Newcastle or Maidenhead) – working from one of our data centres
About Pulsant:
Pulsant is the UK’s leading edge infrastructure provider. Regional businesses and service providers use Pulsant’s digital infrastructure platform (known as PlatformEdge) to build, connect and deploy the applications they need to innovate and grow. The platform is underpinned by Pulsant’s network of 12 strategically located edge data centres, interconnected through a low latency network fabric delivering access to cloud, connectivity, and compute services across the UK. Over 330 people - across our data centres and 3 core corporate office locations in Edinburgh, Gateshead and Maidenhead - help over 1500 clients to achieve their digital ambitions.
Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure, the Head of Data Centre Operations will inspire and lead a team of around 75 people at a time of growth and investment. The role has responsibility for the overall leadership of data centre operations across all 12 sites in terms of people management, mechanical and electrical engineering, energy efficiency and sustainability, systems requirements, process ownership and maintenance of the sites, delivering a high-quality client experience to meet or exceed their expectations. This is a largely on-site role and will involve regular travel across all of the data centres which are spread across the country.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead a culture of safety ensuring all sites are operating strictly in accordance with health and safety best practice and security procedures, and that the environment is safe for all Pulsant team members, contractors, clients, and suppliers.
Manage all financial planning and delivery for the team and the sites (OPEX and CAPEX), ensuring plans and operations are delivered within the approved budgets
Ensure that the operating model is aligned to deliver Pulsant’s strategic goals for data centres.
Lead, inspire and develop the data centre operations team (c.75 people), ensuring clear alignment of individual goals to company objectives and ensuring plans are in place to secure and retain the talent required to achieve our ambitions.
Own and manage a consistent set of standards, procedures and reporting for data centres and ensure that this is implemented consistently across all sites.
Define and implement an infrastructure lifecycle plan, setting our standards for maintenance and replacement of site infrastructure to maximise availability and manage infrastructure risk
Define and implement efficiency improvement plans for all sites, driving plans and investments to ensure PUE improvements and other carbon reduction initiatives are aligned to our Net Zero goals.
Ensure Data Centre inventory is actively managed to achieve the most effective space utilisation and work with the sales teams to maximising client opportunities.
Our ideal candidate:
Prior experience of operating a mission critical infrastructure environment in a senior operational management role
Prior experience of leading, influencing and engaging large operational teams (50+ people) at geographically distant locations to deliver successful outcomes.
Previous experience directly managing significant OPEX (£1m+) and CAPEX (£4m+) budgets.
Commercial acumen, with previous experience partnering with a sales or commercial function to maximise sales opportunities
Experience leading data centres teams would be highly desirable but not essential
Willingness to travel to each data centre on a regular basis (at least every 6 weeks per DC)
