In the role you will be responsible for leading the management and coordination of non-contentious financial services regulatory-related Legal matters, as well as providing independent advice on the interpretation of legislation/regulation to ensure that the Group complies with its legal and regulatory requirements including acting as an independent arbitrator for the Group on differences of opinion in interpretation.You will also have an opportunity to develop thought leadership capability in the Group and externally for regulatory related consultation (both policy and emergent regulations). The role will require you to work across the Legal function and in collaboration with CFCC (Conduct Financial Crime Compliance) to develop effective processes and infrastructure to support regulatory related Legal matters.Key ResponsibilitiesLead the management of non-contentious financial services regulatory-related Legal matters across the Group’s global network, with overall responsibility for providing strategic legal advice, guidance and support to stakeholders across the Group on financial services legislation, regulatory reforms involving domestic and international regulators and standard setters and other regulatory-related Legal matters.Build and maintain an effective and constructive relationship with all key business and functional stakeholders including business and product heads, internal Legal Heads, CFCC, Risk and Finance in order to provide them with relevant legal advice, guidance and support arising from material laws and regulations.Anticipate, lead and proactively provide legal advice and assistance in relation to regulatory-related projects, initiatives and Transactions.Develop thought leadership capability (both personally and by coordinating and leveraging the resources of the Legal function) – as demonstrated by visibility within the Group, and externally (in the industry) as a senior point of contact for regulatory-related consultation.Promote the culture and practice of compliance with legal standards (including conducting business within legal and regulatory requirements, and to high ethical standards) within the Bank and embed a Here for Good culture and the Group Code of Conduct.Act as lead lawyer for interpreting new and existing laws, rules and regulations, and advise on changes which may impact business and product lines, complex multi-jurisdictional transactions, collaborating with business and product heads, internal Legal Heads, CFFC, Risk and Finance to provide seamless support to the business.Work across the Legal function and in collaboration with CFCC to develop effective processes and infrastructure e.g. Horizon Scanning to support regulatory related Legal matters.Facilitate adequate management MI / trackers across all aspects of regulatory legal coverage and responsibility to ensure activity is tracked, followed, regularly assessed and reported on.Recruit and maintain a specialised and motivated Financial Services Regulatory Legal team.Provide leadership, management and coaching to direct reports to enable them to be highly engaged and performing to their potential.QualificationsQualified to practice as a solicitor/attorney or barrister/advocate.Proven track record of providing financial services regulatory legal advice either in private practice, at a Regulatory body or in-house.Deep knowledge and familiarity with financial services legislation and regulatory reform on full range of international requirements facing today’s highly regulated financial services institutions.Experience in leading complex legal assignments in relation to the interpretation and impact of new legislation or regulation with a high level of business impact to deliver appropriate solutions.Deep knowledge and familiarity with financial services legislation and regulatory reform on full range of international requirements facing today’s highly regulated financial services institutions.Sharp business acumen (including ability to assess risk and appropriate levels of return), strong leadership qualities, excellent interpersonal skills and multi-cultural awareness and sensitivity.Understanding of risk management techniques.Sound judgment of business practices, regulatory relationship management and reputational risk.Exemplary integrity, ethics, independence and resilience.Personal authority with proven ability to establish relationships and provide strong direction at senior levels of the business and the Group, and with external stakeholders.About Standard CharteredWe're an international bank, nimble enough to act, big enough for impact.
